After you cross the age of 40, it is necessary to have dietary supplement like you mentioned in your question and these have no side effect but we should consult a Doctor before taking these. People under 40 should not take these as they can become dependent on these for good health, for these a balanced diet is enough

It is best to get your vitamins and antioxidents from food, not supplements. With supplements you run a risk of getting excess of some things (too much can be just a bad or worse than not enough). The FDA does not monitor or check quality of supplements so you can't be sure if the capsules contain what they say they do or if they contain harmful adulterants. Look at all the recent recalls of products from China, many supplements manufacturers get their ingredients from China.

Spend your money at the produce department instead of the drug store; choose brightly coloured fruits and vegetables, dark green leafy vegetables, and whole grains. You won't need supplements.

Check out the uses of herbal formulae. Do not rely on pills and vitamins. If you ever delved into how they make those pills and vitamins as soon as you finished reading about how they are made you would quit using them in disgust. Disgust for the way they are made and disgust over your government for allowing these substances to be created in a laboratory in the first place. Using herbs as supplements can only give you good results, not bad as doctors' try to tell you. Doctors' do not get kickbacks from the herbal industry, therefore all herbs are bad only drugs are good or surgeries that cost your soul as opposed to a few dollars a year keeping you healthy. More on the subject if you email me. I have been doing these herbals for years and I know more.

Dietary supplements are meant to do just that: SUPPLEMENT a healthy diet. They should never be a replacement for a healthy lifestyle. But it sounds like you know that. I think the long term effects will depend on the supplement you are considering. You may want to check with your doc.

I take fish oil and a fiber supplement (I miss out on a lot of fiber because I juice my veggies...I gag when I try eating them). As far as I know, there are no long term effects.

Pharmaceutical companies KNOW that their products do more harm than good however there industry grows by leaps and bounds because of the belief people have in them. They also fund different politicians so their agendas are relatively easily accomplished.
Supplementing is VERY important indeed. Eat fruits and veggies however the concentration of nutrients is lower in these foods today than 50 years ago...So many bowls of spinach today contain what 1 bowl contained 50 years ago.
In terms of supplementation, research VitaOne.
