There are many places that will hire a first time Receptionist/Secretary or even as an Administrative Assistant-all you have to do is go and apply. With basic answering phone skills, customer service /which you already have/ and some computer skills you should be OK. Now you wont be paid as much as you would if you were "certified" but you can take courses along the way and most corporations pay for some training etc...good luck.

I agree with tcc. Look into taking a quick secretarial course with a school that offers job placement assistance, some are as short as 9 months. They work, trust me - been there done that.

You still have plenty of workable years. If you were over 50 then that would be another situation all together. Not stating that people over 50 are not capable of several years of good employment (they are) but employers, when deciding, tend to go for the younger candidate.

You have to sell yourself. Maybe you have no "on the job" experience, but you can take some classes so you can do all the stuff that will be required of you. I see classes in the paper all of the time, one of them is a 9 month class and it is actually entitled (in the paper anyway) "learn the secretarial skills that employers are looking for." I am 42 years old and just completely changed my line of work. It's exciting to do something that I enjoy. Good luck!!

Well I spent my life in sales and decorating and now im the secretart for a couple of home builders for 4 years now. I think the main thing is reliability, confidentiality, punctuality, computer skills, phone & people skills. If you have these qualitys and are very organized it's not a hard job but if you lack these qualities it maybe hard on you.
