Turned it on this morning and the screen was grey with lines running across it. You can hear the sound from the channel in the background but then it pops and clicks and then after a few seconds a lightening bolt looking thing starts at the top and shoots down about halfway through the screen and the tv turns off. Is it fried? Its a normal tv, not flat screen, lcd, plasma, hdtv, just an old school guy. It is probably pushing ten years old. thanks guys.

Your TV is dead (beyond economical repair).

Fortunately for you, old used CRT type TVs are dirt cheap because lots of people are replacing them with flat panel TVs.

As for finding a replacement, www.craigslist.org is a good place to start. Also, college students are known for getting rid of TVs when they leave town. You might find something even cheaper/free that way.

In Jan 08 the US government will start subsidizing digital converter boxes for older TVs; you should be able to update your "new" TV for about $20. They will even come with a new remote control.

There's hope until graduating students are unable to get a jobs at all. My Dad was taking a programming course where they used punchcards, but near the end of his 2nd last year, technology advanced and made everything he'd learned obsolete. He wouldn't be able to get a job without re-learning an entirely different subject, and so had to drop out and get a job to pay off his loans.

Tight on money? With a telly that old I'd say that your whole family are tight. You can get a reasonable TV for £60 to £70 ($120) nowadays. If I were you, I'd wind your gramophone up more often and listen to your 33"s instead LOL

I'm not sure where your located, but you can try www.craigslist.org and choose the city closest to you. In Atlanta, there are lots of reasonably priced TV's on there. Also, there is a free section and I see TV's in it sometimes.

Walmart has new small CRT models for about $100 that are SDTV (digital) ready. Get one of those.

Well some one already suggested Craig's List that is a good place to start, or Wal-Mart, I swear they sell everything.
