It is an attempt to control the minds of certain people, partly by giving them a comfort zone where others profess the same beliefs, where they can center their charitable works, and find appropriate mates for their young people. It is also, for some people, a source of comfort to believe that things are all known, figured out, and all you have to do is go along, obey the rules, and you won't have to be afraid of death anymore.

Sorry; that probably seems rather cynical, and it is not precisely the legal definition. For example, I belong to the Ethical Society, which is classified as a religion for purposes of the law. Nevertheless, many of the members are actually atheists or agnostics. We use the motto "deed before creed," but some of us have beliefs of a spiritual nature. We all agree that the social aspects are worthwhile, and that working on ethics is worthwhile. And it's nice to have somewhere to go on Sunday morning so your neighbors who are going to church don't look at you too weird.

Religion, to me, is rules that people abide to, thinking this is the way to achieving salvation, or to get closer to any other belief they might have. Religion is about rules. If a person doesn't follow by the rules of religion, he is not part of that religion.

I an a Christian. I am not religious. If I tried to follow every single rule of a religion, I would fail. I have faith in Jesus Christ, not in the rules of a religion.

Religion is a belief system that orders one's understanding of the world, and to a large extent, one's actions.
All primitive peoples have some form of religion, which shows that it fulfills a very basic human need...perhaps it is the need to make sense out of the world.

Religion is mans attempt to get to GOD. But GOD had to come to earth to get man back. HE did this by coming to earth in human form.
