I had issues all of my life that I refused to attend to and now they are making sure I catch up. Mostly is connected to my parents, childhood. Now, I am in the mourning process, but I would like to understand what "going through grief" or "allowing the pain" means? What would be avoiding the pain and what would be facing the pain?

read here... it includes the 'stages' of mourning...

going thru your grief is letting yourself experience those stages... in each of us it's a little different in each instance of grief.... like, I loved my mom and really fell apart when she passed.... disliked my dad and his death was more relief than anything else.....

allowing the pain means letting yourself feel it.... too often we 'buck up'... do the 'stiff upper lip' thing and try to look like it's not bothering us one bit.... and that's denial....you have to feel what you feel and experience it fully... cry when you feel like crying...be angry that something happened to YOU... work it out by letting yourself BE whatever feeling is with you at the time.... of course, you don't go out and shoot someone who ticked you off... it's all within reason, right....you said it yourself.. "I had issues.. I refused to attend to... ".... you could have let yourself feel THEN and it wouldn't be so bad NOW... or there were good reasons why you couldn't then.... but now, you can and should.... and ... grief is not just about someone dying.... it is about many other things.. divorce, or having your childhood taken from you... losing a home... or being left alone when you were scared.... many things cause grief.... I'm glad you're working it out now...took me a long time but I got mine straightened out pretty good... blessings...............

Cry when you feel like it, be angry (within reason) when you feel like it. Basically allow yourself to feel the emotions.
