My brother is really into tattoos and I was thinking of buying him a £100 tattoo voucher for his 21st birthday next month. I'm just wondering what kind of tattoo he could expect to get for £100? Size? intracacy of design? etc.

Also, can anyone recommend a good tattooist in London?

Thank you.

First of all, may I say, what a great idea for someone's birthday.

I've asked about a new tattoo design and was quoted £80. The tattooist has booked me in for 2 hours. The tattoo will be quite big, in colour and the main design is quite intricate, hence the time and price. Most tattooists will charge £40 - £50 an hour in the chair. If he goes for a big tattoo, such as sleeve or back tattoo, for 2 hours, he could have the outline done and then arrange to go back for the shading/colouring at a later date. If you know anyone who has tattoos, ask them where they got it done, many tattooists get alot of customers through word of mouth. Visit several tattoo studios and look at any photos of tattoos they've done and ask for the cost of those, it will help you get a good idea of their artistry and prices.

Always remember that usually, if a tattoo doesn't cost alot considering size, design etc it's often a bad tattoo. In this case usually a good tattoo will cost.

£100 should buy about one and a half to two hours of work. Plenty of time for a reasonable sized tattoo with a good amount of detail IF you choose the right tattoo artist. Pre-plan your idea with the artist, this saves time on the day. Get recommendations from other people to choose the right artist (they are not all the same). Make sure that when you go for your tattoo that you are not suffering from the effects of drink or drugs and make sure that you have something to eat before you go. And take a sugary drink with you. This keeps your blood sugar levels up.

Pricing all depends on which artist you go to. And It is VERY important that your brother picks his artist with care, taking into conisderation the style of tattoo he is going for. So with that in mind, unless you know the style he will opt for (japanese, portrait, old school americana, tribal, new skool, etc, etc, etc) do not buy him a tattoo voucher because you are in effect choosing the artist for him for something he will have on his body for the rest of his life. I would give him the cash towards the tattoo instead. My Artist charges £100 per hour, some will do you a tattoo for £10....my artist is world reknowned and I am happy to wear his art on my body for the rest of my life, so don't go for the cheapest option, it is rarely the best choice. If you still want to get him something tattoo related for his birthday, how about a subscription to Skin Deep magazine (UKs leading Tattoo mag) this could help him choose his artist and educate him to help him make the best decisions for him with regards to artist and design. Its about £40 per year.

The price will depend on the studio you go to.
In London expect to pay a minimum of £70 per hour for custom work. Flash designs will vary from studio to studio as will the price.
£100 will get him a good start on a custom piece, but the question is very much like asking how long a piece of string is... ( and before any smart arses reply to that... it's always twice the length to the middle...LMFAO)

Your brother would probably get 2 hours in the chair for £100. doesnt have to get a tattoo finished in 2 hours, could make a god start on a really intricate design and go back in sessions to finish it off, unfortuantly i dont know any tattooists in london, google your local area, or word of mouth will often throw up a good artist.

I guess it just all depends on where you go and where you live, a couple of years ago i went to Gulf Shores, AL and @ a tattoo shop the ones that were the same size as mine were more than double what I paid one that I got that was $70 cost like $200! it was crazy but it all depends on where you go and where your at
