What's the most hardwearing material?

I like the look of a wood top but is this hard to maintain, or can it be painted with something to protect it?

As an interior designer, I would agree with most of the previous answers: high gloss will show damage more. Matt is a safer and more practical option, and looks very attractive. I suspect that if you're interested in the gloss worktops you may already have gloss finish on the cupboards. If this is the case, a matt worktop would be a better idea on a design and practical level. A matt surface would frame and emphasize the gloss cupboards, whereas a glossy counter would be too much of a good thing.

A wooden worktop looks gorgeous but you cannot protect it from scratching a marble or granite is most hardwearing but much more expensive.

I've just installed real wood worktops. They need finishing with a product called "Danish oil".It seems similar to french polish just applied with a rag and sets hard. The joy of it is that if it gets scratched it can be lightly sanded & recoated.Granite is great but V expensive

Marble is expensive but by far the best.
Marble is always exactly 4 degrees cooler than its surounding temp so is health for food etc.
Good Luck
