I guess it is out of respect for the dead, and people think they should remember all the good someone did in their life. But I understand where you're coming from.

A few years a go a girl died in a car crash, she was at school with me, in my year and all my friends were devistated. I on the other hand was pretty unmoved by it, the girl had bullied me horribly, and although I have not slandered her since she died, I haven't said anything good either, I choose not to talk about her.

I guess Hitler's obituary ws probably quite interesting....

I was scheduled to play the organ for the funeral of the most miserable nasty old ladies I've ever known. I went through the hymns that were going to be played at my house a day or two before the funeral and slipped in, "Ding Dong the Witch is Dead", from the Wizard of Oz. I felt better, but refrained from that particular ditty at the service itself.

Telling lies about the deceased is not a good thing to do, for your sake; but if you have nothing good to say, at least say nothing when loved ones or friends are present.

No, everyone says what a wonderful person they were and how they ment well but inside they are calling them a jerk. Weird huh? People always say "well it was just their time to die" and "it's gods will" even if it was a car accident or a shooting.. Go figure If it is gods will then the person killing them is doing gods work... right...
(no I don't believe the whole god thing)
Several people here mention Hitler but we must remember, he had a lot of followers and a lot of people thought it was a good person... misguided people but still they did.

U tell that griefer to stay strong everything happens for a reason. No matter how evil the person was that person is still suffering. U don't have to say anything positive about the decease just say something uplifting to the griever

Its a sign of respect for life. They may have done bad things but its time to appreciate the good things that they did, though they may be small.
Double standards i know, all the good and the bad should be spoken when someone can hear.
Good question.

We are taught from an early age not to speak ill of the dead.

Because most of us were taught that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all, and since most of us also can't shut up we we just say what good things we can.
"Don't speak ill of the dead!"
"Good, he's dead!"
