China surpassed the USA as the most polluting country some time last year. They are way, way behind the USA in the amount of pollution per person. As a country they are way, way behind the overall contribution of the USA since industrialization. It's unlikely any country will ever pass the United States in the amount of pollution per person. That's because the poor people of other countries are so much poorer than the poor in the USA, they are cut off from the main polluting activities, like automobiles, airplanes, heating, and air conditioning. Even the poorest in the USA have some access to one or more of these things.

Yes, we do read about the high pollution creators that richer and advanced countries like US, UK, Europe, Japan are. Soon China, Brazil, India and other third world countries will follow in their footsteps.

The Kyoto protocol has suggested ways to reduce this, and compensate countries that are least industrially developed, and consequently least polluting.

Rather than criticising what has happened in the past or pointing fingers, isn't it the duty of advanced nations to share their advanced industrial production technology and knowhow, also in recycling, pollution reduction, greening of earth, waste water and effluent treatment, and similar knowledge with the poorer nations. "Prevention/Reduction of pollution will be better than subsequent Cure" !
