They are very good dogs, but not for everyone. They are very smart, highly trainable. They love people and are couch potatoes.
They need to be well bred, well socialized and well trained (all dogs regardless of breed need to be).
A well bred Dane has an average life span of 10 years (the same as a Lab or Golden) many live into their teens.
If fed a good quality food they aren't big eaters and don't produce a lot of waste.
They are no more prone to health issues then any other breed/mix of dog. A wellbred, well cared for, well nourished Dane is far less likely to have health issues. Just because a Dane is a giant breed does not mean it will be arthritic, have hip dysplasia or any other issue as it ages.I've owned Danes for over 25 years and have NEVER had one(and I know many , many more as well) that has had dysplasia or that has had an arthritis issue. I've had rescues as well as Danes from breeders.
They don't need large yards or huge amounts of exercise. Most are quite content to be couch potatoes. Most make good apartment dogs. They aren't excessive shedders and are clean dogs.
I show my Danes in conformation (breed), Obedience & rally. I also have certified therapy dogs and all my Danes have their AKC CGC. I use them as meet & greet dogs for CGC tests, do demos, parades and other activities as well.
****Black (or any other color for that matter) Danes are no more apt to have temperament issues then any other Dane. Temeprament depends on breeding, socialization & training NOT color!!!*******

If you're not looking to spend a lot of cash, the a Great Dane is not for you. The bigger the dog, the bigger the expense in EVERYTHING - food, vet bills, you name it. You can try a Dane rescue in your area, but remember - the initial cost of the dog is the least amount of money you will spend on your dog. Remember to factor in training, vaccinations, vet bills, micro-chipping, toys, leashes, food (costly for a dog that big), any boarding, grooming, etc. If you go the breeder route, you will get what you pay for. A good breeder will charge you at least $1000 (if not more), but you will be assured of a healthy, well-bred dog and not some BYB pup who will only cost you in vet bills and heartache later in life.

I LOVED my old dane, great personality, but they only live to be 6 or 7, and that was hard to take, losing him so early. He was an AWESOME dog.
I also had a black dane that I had to have put down because she got vicious as she got older, I was shocked by it, but the vet told me the black ones do that occasionally, I have no idea why. She actually attacked and killed my neighbor's little terrier right in front of us, for no reason.
So any dane except a black one!

I have a 2-year-old Great Dane and he is wonderful. He was a rescue dog and had been mistreated before we got him. With a lot of love and attention, he has really blossomed. He only has one eye and he's pretty clumsy, though. He's very protective of my family also.

I think they're very sweet. I have never known an aggressive great dane. In fact, the ones I've known have been almost problemless in comparison to lots of other dogs I've known.
And they're adorable.

I like them a lot and think they are great dogs. I just hate that they have short lives. Thats the only bad thing, oh yeah...and they take massive dumps!
