Just put out half when the check comes...you would know approximately how much that would be including taxes and tips, and if you are not sure, look at the check....This only becomes difficult if maybe the other party expected YOU to pay....Then just leave the money on the table and don't pick it up. He/she will not leave your portion plus the whole bill, right?

This is decided before you get to the restaurant or as you are ordering when you ask for separate checks. Usually the occasion and how it was presented dictates who pays.

I always had a problem with that one.
I just pay if I ask a friend out to lunch or breakfast.
If they ask me, they end up paying too.
So it works out.
If we go out in a group, we all just know we all have to pay
our own.

"dutch treat"..."let's have lunch, dutch treat"(everyone pays for their own). Make sure you say this before going to the restaurant or at the least while you're looking at the menu.

Why feel the need to say anything??. Nobody assumes you are picking up the tab, unless it is a 'gift ' invitation!.

I'd say it as a joke.
"Hey, I'm not in a very good financial position right now. Would you mind treating me today? hahaha"
