Listen to him and let him verbalize what is going on that is causing him to have a bad day, then both come up with suggestions to change the day, have him decide how he wants to get out of the bad and into the good day. Now get with the plan and have a good day.

Having had many a bad days, I found that when someone close just let me know that they were there for me no matter what, and truly meant it, then that made me feel better. You might try to have a heart to heart with him, let him know that what is making him feel bad will pass as most things that make us sad are temporary. If he feels like letting loose, let him know that it's okay to vent his feelings, that you won't mind being the one to listen to him. Embrace your friend, and let him know how much you care.

You can always take him/her out to his/her favorite food. Or try an amusement park. Or just a walk in the fresh air and talk about something nice.
