You should visit both Macau and Hong Kong.
Macau is only a one-hour ferry ride away from Hong Kong. The fare to a from Macau is only 280 Hong Kong dollars (I think that's about 40 US).
You can spend 4 days in Hong Kong and only a day in Macau. Macau is quite a small place you can tour the entire city in a day. Unless you are into casinos and the gambling staff. In which case I suggest you spend 3 days in Hong Kong and 2 days in Macau.

You should visit both Macau and Hong kong. They are completely different cities. Macau is well known for it's casinos and night life and Hong kong is a shopper's paradise with lots of things to do thru out the day and thru the night as well.
And if you're into Art and culture then both cities have excellent muesuems and places of historic interest. Hong kong also has additional tourist spots such as the Peak, Disneyland, Ocean park and many many others.

Some weeks ago, I asked a similar question but it was out of 3.5 days. Most people strongly replied: "stay in Hong Kong".
Even if my trip will be in November, and that is my first trip over there, I recommend not to spend more than 1.5 days in Macao. You will explore ..all.. the 2 main Islands in less than 2 days. Being so, Hong Kong should be the main destination.
Use earthgogle.com to see H.K. and Macao seen from above.
It might have some limitation of your (mine) interest to shop in H. K. I don't think that I will need more than 1 day to overview what kind of markets are there. My goal isn't to shop for the deals. If you are as me then spend more time to explore the mountains, the beaches and the city centers of H.K. and use the public transportations to do it. Do it by nights as well, that seems to feel a different perspective.

You should have a tour on both Macau and Hong Kong, because Macau is really only good for gambling, and I had been living in Hong Kong for 12 years now, so here is my suggestion for you.
It will be cheaper to go to Hong Kong after chinese new years, and that is around Feburary.
There is a Ferry in Central, Hong Kong called Hong Kong-Macau Ferry Pier that allow you to go to Macau for around $100HKD upto $1500HKD ($15USD upto $200USD) depend on when (it is more expensive at night time) and the classes of seat you wanna be sitting on.
Here is a few plaza I recommand in Hong Kong.
Langham Place, Mong Kok(http://www.langhamplace.com.hk/eng/index.php)
Megabox, Kowloon Bay- built in 2006, most shops have not open at this time. However, they should be opening next year.

APM, Kwun Tong

Telford Plaze, Kowloon Bay

The Edge, Tsung Kwan O

In Macua, there is a few really nice hotel... but I couldn't find a translation for their name, and most information I found are written in Chinese and Chinese Only... So sorry about that.
P.S. If you need any information, feel free to email me.
