I don't know the accent of your friend's name, and depending on whether the 'kuo' is pronounced with one syllable or two ('kwo' or 'ku-oh') i would recommend either JJ or Jonathan.

Jonathan is a very common name (often shortened to Jon amongst close friends) which would fit a three-syllable as chengkuo.

JJ is less common, but almost all English speakers will have heard it. It is a nickname used by people who have two names beginning with J (for example both John Jenks and Jean-Jaques Mirage might be nicknamed JJ). This would fit a two-syllable pronunciation of your friends name.

What are the characters? Maybe you can find a name with a similar meaning.

Otherwise how about Chuck, Joe, James..etc.

The closest I can think of is John. It's close to "chen" but I'm not sure if there's anything that can include the "kuo" part without making it sound somewhat foreign.

He should stick with Cheng, people know you are Chinese. An English name won't change that. But if you must, 'Ken'.
