Eating meat has to do with several things. First, climate. In Tibet, where I live, most people here eat meat. It would be unhealthy not to. There are days when most people choose not to eat mean, special holidays and certain days of the month. Most people here eat meat, but do not kill it themselves. The nomads do, but in the city, the butchers are all Muslim. Furthermore, particularly here, until very, very recently, vegetables were almost unheard of in most of the area.

It is not always practical for people to be strict vegetarians. And, as Buddhists are indeed people, that rule applies. People that say Buddhists don't eat meat, don't know. Western Buddhists can afford to be vegetarians, both monetarily, and with viable protein substitutes. In Asia, it isn't always monetarily possible, or nutritionally viable.

Never heard of a Buddhist eating meat

A statement like "Buddhists eat meat" inferring (All Buddhists) is blatant crap.
I've never heard of it - I reckon it must be the equivalent of Xian propaganda.

One of the reasons Buddhism split from Hinduism was that 2500 years ago Hindus started eating meat.
It is said the Buddha 'came down' to show the way back to vegetarianism.

Having said that it depends entirely on the individual - I'd suggest he MAY choose to eat anything put in front of him if it was deemed hospitable to do so.

Staunch buddhists do not eat meat, for it is a bad karma to kill an animal for sustenance. Buddhism frown upon the shedding of blood, no matter what the reason is.

However, the less strict Buddhist would argue that will it is a sin to kill, they are not the one killing. The deaths of the animals are not a bad thing, for it releases the soul of the reincarnated and it could go to through the Wheel much faster.

And given the choice of feeding one's family with meat or starving them in the absence of edible plants, it is a lesser sin.

I'm a Buddhist too, but I eat meat too. For I think its more important to think and act correctly, rather then depend on restrictions to improve one's karma

Buddhists do not eat meat.

Taoists can eat meat, since it is a natural part of life, but Buddhists are against the karmatic ramifications of doing so.
