If you want to have a lip piercing, then you should deal with the consequences. Some people will decide not to hire you simply because of the jewelry, and other employers wouldn't consider it an issue.
You decided to get a lip piercing, so it likely defines a certain style about yourself that you want to project. You will probably only be comfortable working for someone who respects that.
Be who you are and be happy about it. Don't change yourself to please others.
Good luck in your job search :)

If I were you I would call another Wet Seal and ask if there is a company policy on visible body piercings. I worked there a while back and can't remember honestly if there is one. You are right though it does not put forth the best first impression (and I also have had multiple body piercings so this is not judgemental) Anyhow I say take it out in the car when you pull up to the mall and put it back in asap after the interview. You really have to decide what is more important to you, getting a job or keeping the piercing.

I have been a retail manager for a number of years, in shoe stores, mens formal stores, and trendy stores, and I will tell you that first impressions are everything. Keep all jewelry simple, no flashy necklaces or bracelets, and keep piercings to maybe an earring in each ear, but not too noticeable. Keep make-up simple, and wear nice, clean clothes. We want to interview somebody base on their personality, and if a job candidate comes in with too much jewelry and make-up, etc. this screams "look at me." This person will be perceived as someone who wants attention on themselves, and won't be there for the company team.
Once you've been hired and you know you're companys policies, then ask your manager what is appropriate. Like you stated, some trendier stores might encourage this, like Hot Topic.

It really depends on the type of shop this is. If it's a place which serves food, I think a lip ring is going to go against you. If it's a place that sells fashion jewellery for young people, it might go in your favour. If it's a place that wants a good employee, you might just have to take a different approach!
I look at it this way, when I was young I had three holes pierced in each of my ears, which is nothing today but was very unusual then. I usually wear small, discreet 'sleeper' earrings, but replace them with something nicer when I go out.
I've never mentioned my earrings at a job interview, or tried to hide them, and never been asked about them. And I have NEVER yet gone to a job interview without being offered the job. Every interview I've ever had, earrings and all, I've been offered the job.
Is this about my earrings? I doubt it. It's about my attitude. I am good at what I do. I want to work and I want my employer to feel like the day I came in their door was their lucky day! I work hard, and I am loyal. I am reliable, I have integrity and I do a good job. I build up the strength of every organisation I touch, and identify and attend to the weaknesses. I think about my employer's business and work to benefit it.
I am now in a very senior position and have just been offered (today) a high level management role in the organisation. I still have three earrings and I'm still a great employee.
If you are confident, proud of your skills and know you can do the job, if you are a good worker and a good person, reliable, honest, hard working and worth employing, let your prospective employer know this.
Such qualities are MUCH more important than jewellery!
But the first person you have to convince of this is yourself! Why should this shop hire YOU? Because you are willing to take out your lip ring ~ or because you are going to be an asset to their business? What do you think is more important to them? Make it important to you, and get that job!
Good luck and best wishes! :-)

Personally, I don't mind piercings and tattoos. But, as a store manager, I have to uphold our company policy. All tattoos must be covered and no facial piercings. If we see a staff member with a facial piercing, we make them take it out. We're a fairly relaxed work environment, but it's all about the customers first impressions.

Piercings and tattoos are becoming more acceptable in society, and especially at stores and boutiques that are aimed at the younger generation. If you were interviewing with a store that catered towards more adults I would tell you to take it out in a heart beat. I personally would have no problem with it, but if your worried about it, my advice would be to make an early trip to the mall and hit up some of the stores that sell body jewelery and see if any of them sell clear rings. They seem to sell them for nose piercings most often, which for the period of an interview would be fine. I have my lip pierced as well and sometimes I even wear nose rings in them because they're small cute jewels and barely noticeable, and I tend to get alot of compliments on it.

If you are going to wear it in your lip after you are hired, better wear it at the interview.
The bigger question is why limit your opportunities, take it out and wear it to bars after work.

I wouldn't consider, for one second, on hiring you if you turned up for a job interview with a lip piercing.

I've had more employees than I can count. So take this for what it is worth, I WOULD NOT HIRE YOU or consider you for the job if you showed up with something stuck in your lip. Period.
