Mostly just habit. But the Imperial system does have certain practical advantages. For some measurements, such as the foot, the quart, the pint, etc. there are no comparable SI units that easily describe quantities we use every day. This is why carpenters had to develop the "metric foot" (30 cm). Ordering 430 ml of beer is weird. Ordering a pint is easy.

OMG, I'm American and i went to school using different weighing and measuring systems than the rest of the world.. i think the metric system is much easier to convert, just carry a 0 and what not, but we have to be different. drive on the other side of the road etc.. i don't know, i think America just wants to stand out or something. be unique and what not.
