Ignorance, and the fact that, the pitbull breed has a bad reputation based on a few highly publicized incidents.

OK. Yes they were bred to fight and protect for centuries. This is their way of genetic selection. Now let's remember a basic genetic rule: Phenotype= Genotype plus Environment
That means what you get from breeding physically (phenotype) is the result of the effects of it's genetic structure and it's environment. So every man and animal are born with some genetic traits and then they take their shape with the effects of their environments. Why do people accept that most of the serial killers or psychopaths must have been abused or tortured by their families so they got mad and killed many but they do not believe that an animal may be psychologically vulnerable and if they abused or tortured they may become mentally unstable?
I do not believe that there is the "born evil" thing. Come on they are not Damien of Omen series. They are not born evil they are forced to be evil. And this is natural even for people under some circumstances.
So I do not know why people stereotype them. Probably ignorance or carelessness.

I wish good luck to this breed

I have to say as someone who watched three pit bulls kill a family cat older then myself (I was 18 at the time) and wound up having nightmares about it...even now at 21...I kinda have a little bit of a prejudice against them. HOWEVER, I can say that I do not base it solely on the breed. I honestly think that they can be and are very loving dogs, but I don't think people take into account that pits are more prone to aggression then most other breeds. To me they are one of the "Handle With Care" breeds. I think people just want something to blame other then their own irresponsible actions. So in turn it gets thrown on these innocent animals.

People like eliasulmonte are the real problem. Jaw strength like a crocodile. Locking jaw. No memory.... SHOW ME SOME DATA TO SUPPORT THESE CLAIMS!
Pitbulls may be a little animal agressive (it is their breed), but as far as these outrageous claims go, they are just dogs, and are subject to the same physical laws as any other dog.
The second problem is that if a pit DOES bite someone, the media picks it up in hundreds of markets. If a lab, or a yorkie bites someone, you never hear about it.

It's obvious u don't live in Detroit.

Let me explain. A pet is only as good as it's owner. In Detroit these Animals are bred to be extremely vicious for 2 reasons. Often they are used in dog fighting rings and they are also used to protect drug houses from robbers, if the dog is docile then it is deemed useless and destroyed and the meanest ones are used as breeders. Certainly there are breeds that are much more capable fighters, but the pit bulls has that name that is synonymous with fighting and drug dealers as well as a name that's recognizable amongst ignorant street thugs. Most law biding citizens won't own one because the word on the streets is if you own a pit bull you are a drug dealer. Therefore, in Detroit if your walking with your friends down the street and you see a loose pit bull it's going to attack period and you had better not be the slowest runner. I survived an attack at age 8, it went right at my neck, I was able to get my arm up to protect myself, it missed my neck but was still able to get my arm in it's mouth and part of my face. I'm not going to get into details but you can't imagine EVER the horror and trauma that can occur to an 8 year old boy from such a vicious attack. I've learned not to hate the pit bull but rather it's owner because we are both victims here(not meaning people like you).

Sorry, I know that's not what you wanted to hear but that's why they have a bad rep.

Ignorance is the main reason. 90% of the people bad mouthing pits have never met one personally. They would rather let someone else think for them.

I own a pit/rott mix. Sweetest thing. I'd get another one in a heartbeat too. She's a mix of the top two supposedly bad breeds and she wouldn't hurt a fly. She's a wonderful dog!

I have a friend that raises pit bulls and his are the gentlest dogs I have ever seen. It all has to do with how you raise an animal. It's the same with Rotts and Dobies, people hear something bad about a certain breed and jump on the bandwagon saying all dogs of that breed are vicious attack animals.

you can help the breed by dropping the "pitbull" instead refer to your pet as a "staffie" or an "amstaff".
i have 2 of them and that is how i introduce them when asked what breed they are.
i hope you have not had the ears cropped as this serves no purpose other than to make them look mean.people who fight the dogs do it to cut down on the chance the ear will be injured.
both my dogs ears are natural.
people put them down because of the media and they have not been exposed to what a wonderful and loving pet they are.

I know, several years ago it was the German Shepherd that had a bad name. It is the people that do this to the poor dogs. I am a dog lover and even I exercise caution regarding Pit Bulls b/c I have heard so much and know that people treat them mean and make them fight. It is absolutely horrible and I wish that it would stop.

I own a Pitbull myself and I have never had a sweeter dog. I tell people when they come over, don't worry about him, he will lick you to death, it is my Miniature Schnauzer you have to worry about. It is not the breed, it is the person that owns it. They are stereotyped because they are so strong and once a "mean" one gets a hold of something it wont let go. If you watch the news you hear about Pitbulls attacking people and kids. You never hear about the Chow that attacked the old lady, It is just because people have been taught that they are mean and so the news and society take a hold of that and use it to scare people.

It is the media that makes people fear the breed even though most that are identified as pitbulls are actually other breeds. I always felt the same way when people would say mean things about my doberman or my neighbors rotties. People just fear breeds labeled as vicious.
