I am just amazed by the number of persons I know who are getting themselves treated in rehab-- those who were forced to do so. Wouldn't this be futile?

Actually, the two common reasons why individuals end up in drug rehabs are because the court mandated them, or because their loved ones convinced them to go and get themselves rehabilitated. Researches have shown that those who were forced to undergo drug treatment programs can still benefit from treatment. Treatment programs that offer continuing care may be better for these people.

Yes, it would seem that even the people who do not voluntarily go to the rehab center do benefit. However, they must be committed to the instructions that they receive or else the effort will be futile. It doesn't matter how you get to the rehab center, you still have to have a full commitment to what you need to do in order to get the benefits. xD

my 17 yr old son just successfully completed a 28 day inpatient program for alcohol and marijuana addiction. He was required to do this by his high school to make up for posessing pot in his backpack at school. He has been less than 2 wks and has already relapsed, got drunk with old friends. Since the treatment was not his choice, but a requirement, it may not have a lasting effect

How many psychiatrists does it take to change a light bulb?

>Without the willing to change all the therapy just turns into residivism.
It is possible to help people see that they can change, but untill they want to it is just a political police action. Futile. That is the right word for sure.
