They should be placed in the order that they are standing in the race when they have a re-start after a caution.
It's bad enough to have to go through lapped traffic, but to have to re-start with someone that may be multiple laps down just doesn't make much sense to me.

I think the double-file restart is great because it gives lapped cars a chance to get their lap back. I also think Dave Despain is right that the "lucky dog" rule makes double-file restarts obsolete. However, there needs to be a change in the "lucky dog" rule if NASCAR were to abandon the double-file restart. Drivers should only be able to receive the "lucky dog" one time per race. If the "lucky dog" driver during a particular caution has already received one free pass, give it to the next guy. I think if you go down a lap more than once, there's a reason for that, and you don't deserve to get back on the lead lap anymore.
If NASCAR doesn't change the "lucky dog" rule, I think that only cars 1 lap down should be allowed to start on the inside of a restart. Put all of the cars multiple laps down behind the lead lap cars- they're not going to make up 6 laps even if they do pass the leader on the restart! At least the double-file restart gives drivers 1 lap down a chance to get their lap back. Remember that some lapped cars are competitive, they just got bit by a caution when they were on pit road or the lead lap never cycled back after pit stops.

Not a thing wrong with the way they do it now. Maybe the only change I would do is every track has a preferred groove and that is the groove I would put the leaders and put the lappers to the not preferred groove.
I'm surprised that someone hasn't came up with the idea about running NASCAR races like the Australian pursuit race at the locals are run.
There are many ways to handle this and this is NASCARs way. I say leave it alone. They already have messed with the series enough and it wasn't broke.
I personally think they should put the fast cars at the back at the start of the race. Imagine that kind of racing excitement. You put a time bracket on each drivers qualifying time and that is what he has to run lets say until half way in the race and then he can break out of his Q time and go faster due to car adjustments during pit stops.

It makes the race much more interesting when the lead cars have to work through the traffic of the lapped cars. This is the same whether it be in the middle of green flag laps or at the a restart. Also gives the lapped cars a chance to get their laps back, since they made the rule of no racing back to caution, the only chance drivers have of getting laps back is to get ahead at restarts or be lucky dog. But by 10 laps to go, they should get out of the way, since the best racing at that time is the race for th win.

if you did that then only the lucky dawg will get its lap back OK heres an example say is the second car a lap down the first car gets the lap back so Rudd has to move to the back like you say now he has to race his way back thru a field again in the meantime the leader just put another car a lap down so when the cautions comes out again rudd is still the second lapped car after all his hard work gettin thru the field only to have to do it again

Most all racing, pace car goes in front of race leader at caution. Lucky Dog keeps lapped driver from racing ahead of the leader when YELLOW comes out, so all drivers will slow down immediately, when near/next to leader who has lapped driver.
If leaders go to pit duriong caution, the next in order on track at that moment comes up behind the pace car.
If they don't get back ahead of pack before they leave pit road, they go down 1 lap, or they may be able to slip around and catch up to the pack with a slip under on a pit lane.
# 1 fast drivers then are behind the pack when the green flag falls, or in the middle because most drivers pit with leaders.
If leader pits with most drivers on lead lap, then the next driver on lead lap is #1 on next green lap, gaining points for leading a lap during race (usually about 5 points).
I am ready for YOU to buy the beers!! Who is for that????

So if your favorite driver gets caught down a lap, you want them to use the lucky dog only. There are occasions that the first car a lap down is faster than the leader, and gets their lap back on their own.
Then people want the luck dog taken away too? Back to the old way, of a few cars on the lead lap?

I've been a Nascar fan for 20+ years and I've always thought that the restart should be single file!! It's not fair to the race leaders to have to race against the slower cars when they go back to green.

Thats a really interesting question.I'm glad they don't re-start up front with less then 10 laps to go.But in thinking about it why not have every re-start like the beginning of the race with the leader choosing either high or low on the track and the second place car lining up next to him,followed by everyone else just like the start of a race.I see nothing wrong with that.

Leave it the way it is. At least this way if you have a top 10
car, but happen to be a lap down because of a pit bobble or
a flat, then you're in a better position to work your way to the
front.
