I want a custom made RV. Not a slide on. Is there a US company which will do this? I found one in Austraila, but it is not practicle for the US as the driver side is on the wrong side and the problem of getting it here and warranty. I want a Toyota RV on a 4x4 platform. Is it possible??

Eric, sounds like you and I are wanting the same thing. I have also found the Tiger/Provan which is on a Chevy 4x4. The Host 4x4 is also an option. I wouldnt mind an Earthroamer, but it is cost prohibitive at over $200k. I wouldnt mind building my own Toyota 4x4 RV but really don't have the know how. Maybe we should go into business and provide RV's on a Tacoma 4x4 base. The 4.0L V6 would do a great job. Have to add the back axel and make it a dual wheel. That would be the easy part. I want a one piece molded fiberglass body like the Chinook.

I'm watching this one! I sure don't know of anyone building Toyota RV's since the early 90's, which is a real shame because the newer trucks would probably make great camper platforms.

I was thinking of trying my hand at building my own at one point. That never panned out though. One thing that might work is to find a Chinook RV, refurbish the camper portion, remove the bed from a newer Toyota 4x4, cut out the back of the cab and swap on the camper body. I believe the Chinooks used the stock truck wheelbase and didn't stretch the frame, like most Toyota RV's did. I think a camper body with an 8-foot floor would fit a non-stretched frame just fine. Much longer than that and some wheelbase extending would be in order to prevent awful weight distribution and handling.

Would the australian company be willing to send you the camper body alone to fit onto a US-Toyota truck? (new Tacoma double-cab with 4.0, 6-speed, and E-locker *hint hint*) If you get this to work, you'll have the most drool-worthy camper in town!
