I've read(somewhere) that only about 20% of med school applicants get accepted. Now, does that mean for each school, the average rate of acceptance is 20% but the applicants can still apply elsewhere or that only 20% of all med school applicants will actually go to med school?

Acceptance rate always vary depending on the qualifications of the applicants. If the applicants have pretty good GPA, passed the Admission test, and qualified to enter a certain Medical School by meeting their standard requirements, then there is no reason for them to be rejected. There is a massive shortage of doctors everywhere, so there is no strict limitation of number of entrants not unless there is flooding of applicants, then I believe set of criteria will be imposed in selection of successful applicants.

Every Med. School got differences in their set standards. Some may be tougher than the other so applicants need to find a school that will be suitable for them .

The 20% applies to the the number of kids that actually go to med school. Some med schools have acceptance rates like 4% (Stanford). Typically, big schools like Boston University receive 10-11 thousand applications for an entering class of 175. Thats only 1.6%. It basically works that you have a 10% shot of getting an interview and a 10% shot of getting in once you've gotten the interview. But after all the school tally up their acceptances, it turns out that 20% of all the applicants got in somewhere.

I've never seen 20% before. For all US allopathic medical schools (which confer the "M.D." degree), the acceptance rate is about 2-4%. Some are more selective than others, but that's about the standard. If you factor in osteopathic schools ("D.O." degree) and foreign med schools (Carribean schools, Eastern European schools that mostly confer the "M.D.") then you may get up to 20%. All of these schools are accepted by US residency programs, but the allopathic schools are more highly regarded and have a better chance to get into the more competetive fields (orthopaedics, radiology).
