Springfield makes 2 auto 45's- a 1911 and a XD. My personal preference would be for the Beretta 92. I have the Springer 1911 Mil Spec and its a fine gun-but its a 1911 and operates a little differently from more modern guns. I also have the XD, which is also a different, but good gun. For about the same money- you can get a CZ P-01 or 75 Compact, and either would be better than the previously mentioned guns. Also the FNP and FNX are in the same price range. All 4 of these are excellent guns. The Sig Pro sells for about $400+. All these have the same type operation as the Beretta M9 (92)- SA/DA/ trigger and a de-cocker/safety. So....my opinion- of those you mentioned, I would take the Beretta no contest. But I suggest you look at the others I mentioned. edit: +1 to what rohak121 said- thats more important than anything else.

Assuming you are an Oregon resident, not been convicted of a crime, not have mental illness, etc. etc.
Check out this website: http://oregonfirearms.org/faq/
You can purchase a gun through a local gun dealer which will perform a background check and take your fingerprints, or you can purchase a firearm from a private party and bypass the background investigation.
I would recomend first you rent a firearm at a local indoor shooting facility and to get firearm instruction.
A revolver is good for a beginner, it's reliable and easy to learn the basics of shooting. Learn using the smaller caliber firearms first so you develop good shooting skills before you go to the larger calibers.
Follow the safety rules:
1) Always assume the gun is loaded
2) Never put your finger in the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot
3) Never point your weapon at anything you don't intend to destroy
4) Always know what is behind your target, and make sure it's safe (in case you miss)
Get a gun safe, especially if you have children.

usually you have to apply for a criminal background check. This can take a couple days to a couple weeks to come back from the state. Go to a reputable store that sells handguns. the store clerk will have you fill out some paperwork. you should also get a booklet on your local and state laws regarding handgun ownership and use. Read it ovwer really well. Get a combo lock box, a trigger lock and cleaning kit as well as a proper carrying case for practice at the range. Never store your gun and ammo together and don't generally talk about owning it either. Take a handgun safety course at your local range and make sure you know how to handle it properly. You'll need to make sure the gun is registered to you and handled by you.
Any other adult in the home should also take a safety class and know how to properly handle it. Lastly add a security system to your home so that it'll be less likely you'll need to kill someone someday.

First thing you need to do is learn proper gun handling. You can't do that on-line, or watching TV or movies.
Find an indoor range and ask the employees there if they offer instruction, or know anyone locally that does.
Take some lessons and then decide if you really want or need a handgun.

With the liberal left disarm the victim citizen attitude in your area you should consider a 12 ga pump shotgun for home defense. Easier to handle and 6 shot takes out an intruder without any danger to the neighbors dog or child. Don't forget to vote in the next election for a good american.

spacecase noted that you should never keep your ammo and gun in the same area, locked away seperatly to be exact, that makes it totally useless for home defense, others have recommended that you take a traing course, you definately should!,but if for some reason a handgun makes you nervous, consider a double barrel or pump shot gun,the Mossberg Persuader is a fine choice for this as it is shorter and easy to maneuver, the choice is yours, just thought I would toss another option your way.
