A three-man al-Qaeda weapons team was moving into a mountainside position when Furlong shot and killed one carrying an RPK machine gun from an accurately measured distance of 2,430 metres (1.51 miles). His first shot missed entirely, and his second shot had hit the knapsack on the militant's back. The third struck the target's torso.[1]

The weapon used was the Long Range Sniper Weapon (LRSW), a .50-caliber McMillan Brothers TAC-50 rifle.

This impressive feat of marksmanship is not typical for the effective range with a high first hit probability of the employed rifle (see Sniper rifle: maximum effective range). The ambient air density in the Shah-i-Kot Valley where Corporal Furlong operated is significantly lower than at sea level due to its 2,432 m (9,000 ft) mean elevation. This increases the maximum effective range of a high powered sniper rifle like Corporal Furlong used by ≈ 600 m (1968 ft).

"Arron Perry is a former Master Corporal in the Canadian Forces who was mistakenly credited with having the record for the longest sniper kill in combat."

from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arron_Perry

"In 1967, Hathcock set the record for the 20th century's longest combat kill with a Browning M2 .50 BMG machine gun mounting a telescopic sight. The distance was 2,286 meters or 1.42 miles"

and

"The record stood until the 21st century, when in 2002 it was broken during Operation Anaconda in Afganistan by a Canadian three-man sniper team led by Master Corporal Graham Ragsdale from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI)."

Finally, here is the one:

"Rob Furlong, a corporal of the Canadian Forces, holds the record for the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat. Established in 2002, it exceeds Carlos Hathcock's 1967 record of 2,286 m (7,500 ft) by 144 m (472 ft)."

This question was just asked.

Originally Carlos Hathcock of the United States Marine Corps held the record with a conformed kill in Viet Nam at 2,500 yards using a 50 caliber machine gun set to single shot mode. The scope was a Unertl scope. The bracket to mount the scope to the machine gun was a special design created by Carlos Hathcock.

Incidentally you might also be interested to know that during two tours of service in Viet Nam Carlos Hathcock had 93 confirmed kills and over 300 unconfirmed kills.

Also one of the more remarkable feats of Carlos Hathcock was a kill of a North Vietnamese sniper who was trying to shoot Carlos.

Carlos saw the sniper aiming at him and saw the reflection off the vietnamese sniper's scope. Carlos aimed for the sniper's scope and placed a shot that went through the scope and into the vietnamese sniper's eye, killing the sniper who was trying to kill Carlos..

Carlos Hathcock, more than anyone else developed the modern art of sniper fire in the military. Carlos Hathcock also trained many of the police snipers after his service in the Marine Corps. Many of the top instructors who train snipers in the military and the police were originally trained by Carlos Hathcock.

Recently the record set by Carlos Hathcock for the longest confirmed kill was broken by Candian troops in Afghanistan with several confirmed kills at slightly longer distances. The Canadian troops were also using 50 caliber machine guns set to single shot mode. I do not know what scopes they were using.
