An individual, nation, or organization's carbon footprint is measured by undertaking a GHG emissions assessment. Once the size of a carbon footprint is known, a strategy can be devised to reduce it. It can be applied to a single person, organisation, country, the world as a whole...
It's normally measured in tons or kilograms per year and is calculated as a carbon equivalence. Sometimes it's based solely on carbon dioxide emissions which is incorrect.
For example 'XYZ Company has a carbon footprint of 1000 tons per year', this means that throughout the course of the year the company releases greenhouse gases that have the same impact on the environment as would 1000 tons of carbon dioxide.
