The painting itself is famous for the beauty of its depiction, but also for the mystery surrounding the person who modelled for the painting. (she has been named as a certain nobleman's wife, but some people think that it maybe the face of da Vinci himself). Another famous feature of the painting is the fact that the eyes of the woman seem to follow you as you walk around the room.
Leonardo was famous not only for being an artist, but for his extraordinary gifts in other directions: as architect, inventor, designer, biologist - the list is almost endless. Among his designs were those for a tank and an aeroplane. But his ideas were not fully appreciated in his lifetime.
