Several recent scientific studies have shown that common viruses (e.g. influenza viruses) mutate and become much more virulent in people with common nutrient deficiencies (such as low levels of zinc or selenium). This is a vital concept to understand. The poor nutritional status of the infected person leads to the mutation of the virus into a more virulent form.

Research indicates that 75 % of Americans do not consume the RDA for zinc. More than 50% do not consume the RDA for selenium. Both of these nutrients (and many others) are needed for optimum immune function. The commonly inadequate levels of these and other micronutrients not only impair immune function, increasing the risk of infection, but stimulate the virus to become more virulent.

So, eat the recommended 7-9 servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily, eat the recommended 3 servings of WHOLE grains daily, and consume a quality multivitamin/mineral supplement daily (as recommended by the Journal of the American Medical Association in June of 2002).

Best wishes.
