Obesity is not just about genes and fats. It leads to more serious health effects like high cholesterol, heart diseases, tired pancreas, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure which affects the quality of life.
My blog discusses these and how to gain optimal health through eating the right types of food, without counting calories, carbs or fats.
It is my lifestyle now. I am on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high protein and a hour brisk walk 5 times a week, and I have lost 31lbs/14kg and gained better health. I am now maintaining my 108lbs/49kg for more than a year, with more fruits and complex carbs.
Details such as my experience, meals, snacks, recipes, foods to buy, reading labels, walking as an exercise and to shape the body etc etc, are in my blog

I guess you need to decide if her friendship or her life mean more to you. If it's her life (good choice by the way, if she's dead she can't be your friend can she) then you should tell her straight up that you love her and respect her as a person but that she is going to kill herself in one way or another with food, if it's not too expensive give her the gift of monthly gym membership and go with her, give her pamphlets on heart disease, diabetes and other ilnesses that result as a side effect of poor diet and exercise and tell her that you will support her inher bid to make herself healthy. Focus on the eat right and exercise not so much the weight loss as only focusing on the weight loss will put too much pressure on her whereas if she feels no pressure on losing weight and just makes a commitment to eat right and exercise regularly weight loss will simly be a side effect of her lifestyle changes Be prepared for her to tell you to F.... Off and just give her some time, garunteed she will realise that you are the only person who truly cared enough to sacrifice something you cherish ( her friendship) in order to save her life and she will be back, perhaps you could join a team sport with her instead of the gym if that option is too expensive.
DON'T MAKE HER FEEL LIKE A FAILURE, FOCUS ON THE POSITIVE THINGS SHE CAN DO NOW TO CHANGE HERSELF AND BE HEALTHY AND HAPPY
Sorry I thought you said she was 200pounds, not NEEDED TO LOSE 200pounds, everything else stll stands true to do to her but you should do it now, RIGHT NOW!!!! and she needs to see a doctor before exercising and only use the easy cardio at the gym although it may be more comfortable for her to buy a treadmill and walk on it at home, 1minute, 2 minutes, 3 minutes or even 30 seconds at a time to start with and drink lots of water.GET UP, MOVE AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER AND GO SEE HER RIGHT NOW!!!!!!

You can try telling her that you are concerned about her and how her weight will shave years off her life. Offer to help her lose the weight by going for walks with her and helping her make better choices. You cannot rum it down her throat (no pun intended) as then you will sound like you are nagging. If you talk to her once and she doesn't change then you should leave it alone.

She already knows she needs to....it's just not an easy thing to do.
You will never be able to "persuade" her. All you can do is offer to HELP, support her thru the hard times, maybe help her with a menu selection, walk (or other exercise) with her, etc.
Maybe if she knows you're willing to be there for her, she'll give it a try.

Show her about what her health problems can lead to. For example, I convinced my friend not to tan after I explained and showed pictures of skin cancer.

you can't make her lose weight, esp. that much. you can try getting her interested in a healthier lifestyle. ask her to go swimming with you or make her a dinner thats really good and low in calories.

Don't try. You'll only cause resentment. No good deed goes unpunished.
