Well.. First you cry.. Then you wonder if you could have done more, if you had done something differently would things turned out different.. Then you cry.. Then you get someone to dig a big hole in the backyard and you bury your dog.. Then you go back into the house and cry, or you sit on the back deck staring at the spot where you buried your dog and you cry.. Then you avoid looking out certain windows in the house cause you can see from those windows exactly where you buried your friend... Then one day you realize that you no longer are crying, it still hurts but the crying is done..And then you are ready to go on.

First, it's always hard when your pet (friend) dies. It's ok to feel your grief and pain, as I'm sure you will. It's ok to cry your heart out and that will happen on and off for the first few days, and then when you think you can't cry anymore, you'll start again, but remember, it's ok to grieve.
There isn't any real way to get ready, I don't think anyway. But knowing if you'll do a backyard burial or cremation helps in that you won't have to make those decisions when you just can't think about them. As for cremation, it's one way to keep your pet and friend with you no matter where you are or go. All you need to do is call your vet and get the details, they are very helpful and will respond knowing you are grieving. There are also pet cemeteries these days, that is somewhat different but some folks like the idea and they have a nice one in San Diego.
Try to have friends and family close by to help when the time comes and expect to grieve, and remember, it's ok too.
I'll keep you and your dog in my thoughts and prayers.

Take your dog's body to your vet's office. They should have a company that cremates animals for them. There will probably be a fee involved. You can even get your dog's ashes back, if you want to.
You may want to call your vet first, to confirm that they do offer this service. If they don't, I'm sure that some vet in your area does.

The best thing to do if your dog is ill and suffering is to humanly euthanize your dog. Most vets fee's for euthanasia include taking care of the remains. Most offer cremation as well, for a fee. Your dog will be in a cedar chest and you can keep him in your home forever.

I'm so sorry! I would take my dogs to the vet to have them euthanized. It seems less painful...the vet could tell you what to do either way!

I live in a very rural community and plenty of fam. pets get a backyard burial...but I'm not sure that's sanitary.

Call your vet. Bring your dog to your vet. If your dog is suffering, your vet will humanely euthanize your dog and will take care of the remains.

If your dog has already died, call your vet and ask them how you can make arrangements to cremate your dog for a small fee. Your vet will advise you.

Take care.

I know this is wrong but when my dog died my dad said he would bury it but he put it in a black trash bag and put her out with the garbage. I'll never forgive that. You could bury it yourself or take it to the S.P.C.A. sorry for your loss.

The SPCA will not charge you but you should give a donation.

If possible, bury it in your (or a friend or family member's) yard. Otherwise, they will charge you to have it disposed of at the vet's.
