"Accident rules every corner of the universe except the chambers of the human heart."

It`s the last line in a book called Snow Falling on Cedars by Davis Guterson, but I would like your take on it even if you haven`t read the book.

Thanks,
Minx.

Out of context, I should say that it means that throughout the universe everything that occurs is mere happenstance — that there is no rhyme or reason to it all, except within the human heart.

Of course, «human heart» refers not to the physical muscle that pumps blood through the circulatory system, but it refers to the inexplicable, ethereal essence of the human psycho-emotive-consciousness («— whatever that may be).

At any rate, the entire statement is false because if 'chance' rules in every corner of the universe, then it must also rule in the human consciousness.

Conversely, if the chambers of the human heart are ordered and non-accidental, then the entire universe must also be ordered and non-accidental.

although people cannot stop things like a war or a snow storm which are inevitable and ruled by chance, they can however perform individual acts of kindness which can obliterate the world from hate, prejudice, and racism, things that are not prone to chance or circumstance. In this way, "accident rules every corner of the universe, except the chambers of the human heart."

I don't claim to have read the book, but I'd interpret it at a glance as meaning that there are no accidents in love, the human heart being the supposed governor of love and suchthelike in western mythology.
Perhaps it means that you never fall in love with someone accidentally, it's predestined, or somesuch thing. We all have very specific reasons for picking the people we do, psychologically and biologically. Maybe this is attributing true love to inescapable fate.
Dunno. *shrugs* I'd have to have read the book to give you more.

My experience is that we ultimately have no control over where our heart leads us. It's a hermeneutical dillema. We all see the universe through eyes that no one else posseses and we all interpret what we see through those eyes. The ultimate goal of mankind is to either realize God, or find our soulmate. Then we come as close as we can to sharing our experience with someone who understands.

I am a bit dense at this sort of thing but I think it is saying that you only have a hold over what happens from your heart , that what you do yourself is your responsibility, everything else you have no control over.

God does that even make sense??

the quote "Accident rules every corner of the universe except the chambers of the human heart." ..contradicts God? because nothing is at random in the universe(is it because i believe in divinity?). so that would mean nothing is an accident , there is a cause for everything and a reason. please help.
