I'm not an economist but it looks to me like this is the real choice that the US must make to have a realistic relationship with Mexico and cooperation to help control illegal entry.
And understand when I say export jobs: many of those jobs do not exist in the US today so they are not hurting US citizens. And more opportunity and prosperity for people in Mexico is not a bad thing for the US people.

Glen B Good question thank you I forgot to say!
Exporting jobs to Mexico thast are not in the US by exporting Investment. Business investment in Mexico and working with Mexicans as partners will do more for economic development than any govt BS. And it is not charity it is common sense.

king Banks of USA: Yes I believe that the money sent back to Mexico is >$20B. Mexico has a $1.2 trillion GDP but that money is foreign exchange so it is probably more important than a 2-3% number.
And win-win seems to me that should be Both Americans and Mexicans benefiting.

Let's Party! I never can understand why China is a favoured trading partner with the US when it clearly does Not share American values and is not what I call a free and open society.
Mexico has the advantage of being next to the US and has a western culture and people who can relate to American culture and business. Yes it has problems but that is no reason to avoid better and closer relationships which will help to improve them.

i am not an economist either but so much which i had read so far tell me that either one than ur mention would be really great . there is so many facts which should not be insulting to anyone because they are facts such as the USA having an aging population so either way MUST be done in the future , we will either have to outsource millions of jobs or will have receive millions of immigrants , so what better way than to fix things by starting to prepare assuming what the census is already saying will happen and which is happening in some areas of the USA which are finding difficult to find the work force than they need . in my opinion to send jobs to Mex or to accept more immigrants form Mexico is much better than either sending jobs to china or to receive More immigrants form china , Mexico is our next door neighbor not China enough said .
EDIT : what slew talks about is partly true however our effort should be put in making sure any bad conditions in Mexico are taken down with out being abusive only thinking about the USA , in my opinion solutions which help both countries should be priority before making any business with countries which are way to far away from us to actually being beneficial to either the USA citizens and the Mexican citizens . all this reminds me of the speech which the American president gave in Mexico while WWII was going on about how we should start thinking as neighbors which would be affected if anything bad happens to either one . in his speech he did mention that t it was time to stop thinking just about the few while all others were being exploited sadly that promise did not happen then but in my opinion should happen today .

A great deal of the NAFTA is precisely to encourage companies in the 3 countries (yes, Canada is included) to promote investment in each country and create jobs in all countries.
Now, it depends a lot in the type of industry to decide which is best to do. For instance, Wal-Mart is now the biggest retailer in Mexico and one of the biggest companies in the country. When they moved over here, American residents didn't loose jobs, and new jobs were created in Mexico. Naturally, some Mexicans lost their business against Wal-Mart.
On the other hand, there are companies who are devoted to assemble products, like Hewlett-Packard. I am not sure, but I think they closed several plants in the US in order to open the one in Guadalajara. That did hurt American families back in US.
If I was American, I would find ways to encourage American companies to stop opening sites outside US at the risk of losing jobs inside America. I believe that on the end companies have a duty to their own country, and not only to the stakeholders.

We are limited in exporting jobs. Mexico limits our ability to do business. They try to prevent American Business from entering. That is part of the reason why the condition of the Mexicans are so much inferior. There is a lack of competition in certain arenas. That is why Carlos Slim is so rich. Ther is no competition in the Cell phone industry. rankly i think there should be some restriction, but when their home grown companies are stable, they should open up for some competition. Mexico also is destroying their own country. They ahve the advantage of being next door to us, but their factories never took and is being overwhelm by the Chinese. Allowing America a bigger profit when doing business in mexico, would attract American managers that know how to compete against the Chinese. The problem isn't labor cost in Mexico, but doing business in Mexico is too disorganized. China build entire Cities around a single industry. It's easy for a factory to find proper suppliers that way and things move along smoothly. Mexico tried that, but they never follow through and these factory towns are abandoned. I would prefer giving them financial aids, like microloans, but honestly it's unfair since there are other countries more desperately needing that fund. $1,000 in Mexico does not have the same affect as it would in Ethiopia. The poorer the nation the more dramatic the affect the dollar would have.

We could export jobs to Mexico. But honestly I think American business will probably start looking somewhere cheaper like China.

Mexico is doing NOTHING about helping the illegal flow of immigrants. Have you heard the President and the Senate's stance on US treatment of illegals in our country?
Deport them. The only viable option.
And just how do we export jobs that do not exist in the US?
Edit; Let me get this straight. You want to send finances to back investments in Mexico? Do you realize the loss of finances in America due to illegal immigrants sending the money they make across the boarder? I could not give you a number, but I'd imagine it's a lot...which in turn gets pumped into their government.

Yeah, that sounds about right for the choice we have to make. But it's not about our relationship with Mexico. It's the result of an internal problem of us not having enough people to fill our jobs.
Although if we decide to import labor, we also have a choice about how to do it.
Also note that if we export all our agricultural jobs to Mexico, then our relationship with Mexico gets worse, and they stop exporting food to us, then we might starve. It is important to keep a domestic supply of some things, so that we can ensure that we have control over them.

The facts: Mexico has a lot of people needing a job
Usa Has the need of Cheap workmanship
What should happen: The people in the government of both countrys should do something to fullfill both needs, and don't listen to the jerks saying a lot of stupid and impractical arguments.

That pretty much sums it up. I would say though, that this issue is as bad as I've ever seen it. The longer Obama sits on it, the louder his critics will get. This may get even hotter than Obama care with all of the infighting between states and government agencies. It's obvious that the majority of the country especially AZ is sick of the way the Feds have handled this.

Call Disney. They already grow watermelons in Mexico (true).
Today in Oklahoma City, 65 gang bangers were arrested and 63 of them were ILLEGALS FROM MEXICO and they WILL be deported. The LA Times reported that 95% of the outstanding warrants for MURDER are for ILLEGALS! Those are not the kind of people who need to be in our country. If you want to come to my country, do it legally or STAY OUT!
