The whole point of crate training is teaching the dog when you want it to go. Let it out every hour or so to go potty. Please do not over use the crate and have it in there too much, this will create more problems.

Crate training isn't about excessive confinement to their crate. They should be in it at night, when you're gone, and under special circumstances (company, etc.)
That being said, you can get your dog on a schedule like most indoor dogs are. They will learn to hold it, and they'll know when it's time to go!
Personally, on the few circumstances our dogs have had to be in their crates during the day (we had new flooring put in) all four of them would whine, or pace.
Sometimes I think my bedroom is a zoo with four crates!

Bindi will get restless and whine at me when she has to go out.
She goes in her crate to sleep at night, night time outings have stopped now but she'd get restless and whine even as a pup.
I let her out her before I leave the house, she goes in her crate while I'm gone.
When I am home, there are times when she can't spend alot of time outdoors, like if the weather is crappy. She goes out to potty, comes back in. So on those ocassions when I have to something in the house she can't be around, she goes in her crate.

ok crate training, is just like a safe place to put your pet, when he needs rest, sleep, or traveling to the vets, etc
feed him, then wait 20 mins, then let him go outside,
then put him in the crate,
if he stay there over night make sure he get out, early , the max time is about 6 hours, so let him out ,late at night ,and he will be fine ,

The only time the dog should be in the crate is when you aren't home, and when you sleep.
THAT'S IT!!!
The rest of the time, the dog should be on a leash tied to you.
To get him to signal you, teach him a signal. When you go to take him out, pick up a paw and scratch the door, or whatever you want him to do.

If they're in a kennel, they wont potty in it if they don't have a whole lot of room. They like to keep their comfy place clean.. so they will whine when they need to go.
