DEI does not own the number 3. No team owns any number. RCR had the number 3 but after a period of dormancy it is now available if someone had the guts to use it. I think everyone is tired of the number games with that spoiled bratt. Who really cares. He hasn't won a race in some time now. That is probably the real reason he is leaving DEI. He will not last long if he does poorly with HMS.

Dale Jr. should drive the 3, he is the only one who can. But if he cannot get the 3 then it really does not matter. He is a great driver and now with Hendrick money and Technology behind him he will have every opportunity to succeed. Oh and by the way DEI does not own the 3 car, RCR owns the 3 car.

RYR asked NASCAR to transfer the #38 to Hendrick for Dale Jr.: SPEED's Bob Dilner reported on Sunday's SPEED report that Robert Yates Racing has asked NASCAR if they could transfer the #38 to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 for Dale Eanrhardt Jr. to use, the #3 in honor of his father, the late Dale Earnhardt, who ran the #3 [a few races in 1981 and then from 1984 until the 2001 Daytona 500 and won 6 of his 7 championships using #3] and the #8 of course is Dale Jr.'s car #8 since he came into the sport. No word what number David Gilliland would switch to, but RYR still has the license on the #28, last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd and has used the #90 in the past.
AND: Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com on Monday that Robert Yates Racing and Hendrick Motorsports are discussing a transfer of that number for 2008. The #38 currently is being used by David Gilliland. No formal request has been made to the NASCAR, which has to ultimately approve the transfer. Officials at Hendrick Motor Sports, Robert Yates Racing and JR Motorsports could not be reached for comment. Should RYR give up #38, it still has the rights to the #28 that was last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd.(ESPN.com)(8-27-2007)

Correction DEI has the rights to the #8, NASCAR owns it and Richard Childress has the rights to the #3 which he retired in Honor of Dale Sr.

No one knows what his # will be even tho there's tons of rumors about it, but what ever it is Jr will pick a number he and his fans can live with.

Jr will get to use whatever HMS and Nascar decide.

He won't be in the 8 (DEI), 3 (Childress), 38 (RYR), 83 (Red Bull Racing), 08 (EM) all own those #s.

Childress owns #3 and DEI owns #8. Jr will be driving for Hendricks so he won't have either number.
As far as what number he will have. Does it really matter?

He should use a completely new, unused number (if that even exists in NASCAR). Give the guy a chance to step out of his Dad's shadow and make a name for himself on his own.
