Yes, someone in power at your school is a jerk, or just overwhelmed by the multidimentional logistics of running a large school.

But if you can't change it, you can change what you do during that period. You can work on other classwork.

You can learn new things of your choosing and interest by reading library materials.

You can practice writing editorials and drawing political cartoons for the school newspaper or the city newspaper.

You can envision and write meaningful fiction, and script/storyboard for an act you will perform either in a class or the school talent show.

You can write to the local newpaper and to tv and radio journalists and to your congressman a complaint about how faulty logistics at your school is undermining your education.

You can begin to learn a new foreign language by listening to a 2-CD set called "Pimsleur's..."

Ironically, doing these things will certainly be more beneficial to your education than any class lecture, test, notetaking, problem solving, or assigned reading you could possibly be doing during the same period in another noisy classroom.

Accept the parameters of the situation and within them create feasible benefits that were not apparent at first glance.

Write and mail a thank you card to your counselor for providing you with such a wonderful developmental growth opportunity and change of pace which makes your school day more productive than ever.

And then write and mail a card to the principal praising that counselor for the same things so the principal will favor that counselor and that counselor will favor you.

Don't apologize for anything that happened earlier. Thank you notes override apologies, are 100 times better and more effective, and erase entire situations.

Later, ask for some kind of assistance in achieving a particular goal of yours. This idea I get from a book written by Benjamin Franklin-- he said the most efficent and effective way to make a loyal friend/associate is not to volunteer your service, but TO ASK A FAVOR OF THEM and later thank them for it. I believe it's true. Watch how people will turn down your help, but they will be happier and offer to do more after they have helped you once. You have empowered them.

I'd recommend that you show them this question and the way you wrote it. I'm sure they can find a remedial writing class to get you into. You may even learn of something called "proofreading".

"Counselors at my are jerks?" isn't a sentence and isn't a question. During your zero period you should practice the phrase "You want fries with that?" I have a feeling you'll be using it for a long, long time.

Yah, glade you added that detail. I thought they were getting on you for English. What you clearly need to go is go to someone taking class at the time you want and threaten them until they quit and make space for you so you don't have to get up in the morning.
