In India and several other countries (Singapore for instance)the basic medical degree is the MBBS. It is equivalent to the MD in the US and someone who has done an MBBS is eligible to apply for a residency in the US after passing the MLE. In India, if you do a residency after MBBS in a non-surgical speciality like Internal Medicine, Pediatrics etc, you get an MD after completing the residency. In surgical specialities, you get an MS (Master of Surgery). If you further subspecialize and do a fellowship, you get a DM (Doctor of Medicine) if it is in a non-surgical speciality or an M Ch (Magister Chirugiae) if it a surgical one.

M.Ds are pretty much North American and is a graduate degree. The other is basically the rest of the world and in most cases they don't require you to have a bachelors degree inorder to get into the program. Getting a M.D will usually take longer than MBBS I think only people who hold M.D or D.O degrees can get into residencies since again, it's pretty much restricted to U.S and Canada.

I don't think there is a difference. Well...I know in my country they use the MBBS title, but if you attend a medical school, and earn either degree, you should be able to enter into residency later on. Hope this helps. :) Good Luck!
