What do I do if someone smiled at me?

Is smiling at people an invitation to talk?

What actions must I take if I am smiled at. Is it expected of me to do something other than smile back? Should I smile back?

Girls if the guy who smiled at you wasn't attractive to you , how would you respond?

if he was unattractive i would just smile back and try to look not interested. But in the case of a girl smiling at u then just smile back more than likely that's what she was expecting to happen. Probably the reason that she smiled at you in the first place..just an idea.

It's not an invitation to talk at all.

A smile is a way of showing that we're all humans. We are all the same, we are all connected. I love when people smile at me, I always smile back and continue to smile even after I've walked past them. Just because it makes me feel good.

If an unattractive guy smiled at me, i'd smile back. As I would to anyone no matter what.

it is expected of you to smile back, but you don't have to do anything other than that, unless you want to. It depends on the situation: if you're in a bar, a coffee shop, even at work on your break, it is almost certainly an invitation to talk. If it's walking down the street or in a shop, I don't think it nesissarily is, but that doesn't mean you can't. But not smiling back is quite rude.

Sometimes, smiling at people just means you're happy. But if the person is very clearly smiling AT you, and you'd like to talk to that person as well, make eye contact, smile happily back and say "Hi!" Introduce yourself, ask how they're doing, etc. Don't come off too strong, just friendly and happy.
When I'm smiled at by a guy who I don't find attractive or if I'm just not in the mood to be friendly, I give a lackluster, half-hearted, almost grimacing smile back to be polite and quickly move my eyes away from theirs.

If you are interested in having a conversation with the person who smiled at you, smile back and really make a good strong eye contact,
if you are not interested in having a conversation just smile back and look away.
Always smile back it's polite.

Depends. It very well could be. But it could also just mean that it was a way of saying hello in a non-communitive way. It's a good thing though if they smiled at you. If YOU think it's an invitation to talk then take it.

--not really. maybe they're just spreading cheer around them.

Just smile back. If the person is attractive, then smile longer and make eye contact.

I'd smile back and visit with them. I'd be polite and honest. You never have enough friends! I know that guys hate hearing that, but I don't understand why. I actually know lots of couples that started out as friends and the girl figured out that she was into the guy later. Never give up hope if you really like the girl.

Depending on where you live, I have found that sometimes if you smile at people and make eye contact with them for 3-4 seconds after a while they will say something like, "Oh, I thought you were going to ask me something. Were you going to say something?"
