since you say Marines, I assume you mean O3.(Navy and CG, Captains are O6..a 15-20 year career progression)
all promotions for all Branches are automatic through O3.
O1-O2 is 18 mos.-2 years.
O2 to O3 is 2 years
After that, your file goes before a board and you must be selected. Plan on being an O3 5-7 years before being eligible to promote to O4.

Well, if you enlist first and then get your degree (3-4yrs), you have to apply for your commission. IF you get it on the first try (which doesn't usually happen) then you go to OCS (officer candidate school) in Quantico which is around 12 weeks, then you wait for a slot to open up in TBS (the basic school) which is 6 months. You don't get to choose your MOS either. Depending on your scores at the end of the 6 months, depends on how high you get ranked, which depends on priority for you and in which bases. So far that is about 6 years. Then IF you graduate from TBS (not all do), then you'll be O1-E (Officer 1 Enlisted). It's not a given when you are an officer that you'll pick up the next rank. It all depends on your work performance. It could take another 3-4 years to attain captain. A friend of mine, her husband did as you are asking and he's been in a total of 10 years and just got promoted to captain last month. My husband is a Marine and is going to go Chief Warrant Officer to attain officer. A degree isn't needed and you still have to apply, and won't necessarily get your MOS. But with my husband's MOS, he doesn't have time for college, so that is the next best thing. Once you are eligible for CWO-3, you can choose that or O-3 (captain), which takes 6 years after you get CWO-1. Just depends on which road you choose. Good Luck.

Well, I know from 2 Lt to 1Lt is 18 months, then I believe its another 12 to make Capt. I may be mistaken on the 12 but its some where between 12 and 24 months. However if you are enlisting without any college, it takes along time to get a BA while serving on active duty. From the majority of people I've spoken with, it takes roughly 8-10 years. Between working 40-60+ hour weeks, training, and deployments, there really isn't a lot of time for school, you've gotta be pretty dedicated.

in case you have been to enlist as a private and not flow to OCS its impossible so you might ever develop into an 2d Luey not to show a Captain. you need to develop right into a Warrant Officer the utmost rank being equivilent to a considerable?, you're entitled to a similar privliges as officers yet even on the utmost grade you nonetheless rank decrease than a 2d Lieutenant. E-a million/E-9 are the ENLISTED pay grades a million being lowest 9 maximum. 0-a million/0-10 are the OFFICER pay grades " "10 maximum WO/CWO-5 are the WARRANT OFFICER pay grades. It takes awhile to get to Sergent interior the Marines. Pvt to %is an computerized merchandising after a definite volume of time %to LCpl " " some recruits that have have been given human beings to enlist or meet particular requirement which comprise being an Eagle Scout could properly be promoted to LCpl for the period of or precise out of boot camp. LCpl to Cpl-relies upon NCO and Officer ranks could desire to have openings so you might get a merchandising. a similar applies to Cpl to Sgt. i might say on common you're observing around 6 years

You need to apply for a commission and after you get your commission it should take an average of 4 years to get to captain. That is what it takes the air Force.
A Navy Captain is equal to a Colonel. they are both O-6. Many don't reach this.

Are you kidding. You go into both branchs as a 2nd Lt and advance to captain. I don't know about now, but it depends on a lot of things. One is whether you went to West Point! You can usually get to captain in about 6 years!
It isn't automatic and you can be passed over. The 2nd pass over is a kiss of death in the military!

If you are talking about the Captain that commands a ship and is the equivalent of an Army General I would say a really long time.
