It is very stuffy and uncomfortable to breathe.

Hard to say without knowing what kind of unit it is. Some units (like the HealthWay) produce a strong EMF charge that can bother people. Some machines (like those made by Sharper Image or Ecoquest) produce levels of ozone than can be an irritant. Although most people describe ozone as making the air dry. If it is a HEPA filter, some companies use all sorts of toxic glues to hold their filters together. Many companies build their machines with plastic....and plastic off-gasses VOCs making the air more polluted than when you started. If you purchased your machine from a reputable dealer, you should call them on the phone to discuss your concerns. Most have a 30 or 60 day return policy. You might want to take advantage of it.

Some air purifiers produce ozone. These are usually ones that produce an electrostatic charge to capture dust and pollen.

I suggest you check Consumer Reports.

Does your air purifier contain an air freshener? Some air purifiers also perfume the air and people can be allergic to the smell. Find the fragrance canister and remove it.
