Distant space collision meant doom for dinosaurs By Will Dunham
Wed Sep 5, 3:36 PM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A collision 160 million years ago of two asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter sent many big rock chunks hurtling toward Earth, including the one that zapped the dinosaurs, scientists said on Wednesday.
Their research offered an explanation for the cause of one of the most momentous events in the history of life on Earth -- a six-mile-wide (10-km-wide) meteorite striking Mexico's Yucatan peninsula 65 million years ago.
That catastrophe eliminated the dinosaurs, which had flourished for about 165 million years, and many other life forms, and paved the way for mammals to dominate the Earth and the eventual rise of humankind, many scientists believe.
The impact is thought to have triggered a worldwide environmental cataclysm, expelling vast quantities of rock and dust into the sky, unleashing giant tsunamis, sparking global wildfires and leaving Earth shrouded in darkness for years.
U.S. and Czech researchers used computer simulations to calculate that there was a 90 percent probability that the collision of two asteroids -- one about 105 miles wide and one about 40 miles wide -- was the event that precipitated the Earthly disaster.
The collision occurred in the asteroid belt, a collection of big and small rocks orbiting the sun about 100 million miles from Earth, the researchers report in this week's issue of the journal Nature.
The asteroid Baptistina and rubble associated with it are thought to be leftovers, the scientists said.
Some of the debris from the collision escaped the asteroid belt, tumbled toward the inner solar system and whacked Earth and our moon, along with probably Mars and Venus, said William Bottke of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, one of the researchers.
DEADLY COLLISION
The collision is believed to have doubled for a while the number of impacts occurring in this part of the solar system.
In fact, while the bombardment of this region of the solar system due to this shower of debris peaked about 100 million years ago, the scientists said the tail end of the shower continues to this day. Bottke said many existing near-Earth asteroids can be traced back to this collision.
"Imagine breaking up a big, big boulder on top of a hill and all the fragments rolling down the hill. And somewhere at the bottom is a village called Earth," Bottke said in a telephone interview.
The dinosaur-destroying meteorite, thought to have measured 6 miles across, plunged into Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and blasted out the Chicxulub (pronounced CHIK-shu-loob) crater measuring about 110 miles wide. The researchers looked at evidence on the composition of this meteorite and found it consistent with the stony Baptistina.
The researchers estimated that there also was about a 70 percent probability that the prominent Tycho crater on the Moon, formed 108 million years ago and measuring about 55 miles
across, also was carved out by a remnant of the earlier asteroid collision.
Philippe Claeys of Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Belgium, who was not involved in the research, said by e-mail the findings were "clear evidence that the solar system is a violent environment and that collisions taking place in the asteroid belt can have major repercussions for the evolution of life on Earth."
Bottke emphasized that point. "Dinosaurs were around for a very long time. So the likelihood is they would still be around if that event had never taken place," Bottke said.
"Was humanity inevitable? Or is humanity just something that happened to arise because of this sequence of events that took place at just the right time. It's hard to say."

i dont dispute that at all .. i think the dinosaurs were part of a previous creation on earth and were destroyed by a possible asteroid collision ... bringing us into genesis when the earth was void and darkness was on the face of the deep ..

Not that you SEEM to be looking for the truth, but I'll address this anyway for SOMEONE's benefit.
First ask yourself where they got their facts. This is VERY important in any research. These scientists got their facts from first forming a hypothesis (all part of the scientific process). Then, they develop it, ironing it out and making sure the wrinkles are either minimal or nill (still part of the process). Then they make experiments to base their facts on (nothing wrong here). When their experiments lead to one direction, they thrust all their research into that direction (uh oh, could data be lost doing this?). Then they gather enough evidence to support their idea enough to cause doubt in any idea that would oppose their own. When they finally have all the data they need to support their idea, the begin skewing the facts, causing it to point only toward their idea.
So what's the flaw? Look at the percentages of likelihood. Ask yourself honestly "what's keeping that other 10 or 30 percent?" The ten or thirty percent is found in the situations that they either didn't experiment with, or pre-determined to be unimportant. When in fact, these tangents may have completely nullified their theory. For example, ask yourself where the evidence that there were asteroids is. Since they claim it was millions and millions of years ago, they can easily rotate the planets back that far because they travel at a defined path. But if there were asteroids that followed a path, suddenly, for the past hundred million years, the evidence of their existence gets lost. What do they have? They have craters in the moon and earth that share similar properties? Lots of satelite bodies in the universe have similar properties. You and I have similar properties, yet we're very different people.
Ask yourself how the humans could have survived. We are some of the most vulnerable beings on the earth. Sloths are exponentially more vulnerable than we are. How the heck would they survive? They're not cockroaches that can survive nuclear bombs. They have a soft skin layer. And if you believe in evolution, you know it would take a LOT longer than 100 million years for an organism that COULD have survived the impact to evolve into humans. And if it COULD have evolved into humans, then there would also be organisms that survived that would have re-evolved into dinosaurs.
When dealing with such big numbers, the range of possibility for error is obviously much higher, even when dealing with predictable elements such as orbits.
If I took the same evidence and worked hard enough supporting my theory and not looking at the counter-facts, I could PROVE that the asteroid was not hit by another asteroid, but was really zapped by aliens in a UFO, then the aliens zapped every remaining dinosaur from earth and stuck a few humans here.
If that sounds crazy to you, then you now know how this scientific evidence with all the mentions of "thought to be" and "might have" is to me.

Millions of years & all that dribble is just people imagining what they don't know and acting like it is fact. There have been cases of rock being scientifically dated to extreme ages that was undeniably much younger. Also, I once attended a lecture in which a slide was shown of a fossilized, ancient sandal-print (with a peg imprint) that had crushed a trilobite beneath it. Now before you say that's impossible, what about the ancient fish caught off Africa? People conjecture and conjecture should be treated as such, with an honest openness for truth, unprejudicially. Wow, how about that radical, fossilized cowboy boot? (See site below & scroll down a bit.)

Did those scientists SEE it happen?
Then they must be making it up!
Don't give me any of that 'gravity' and 'orbital mechanics' blasphemy - it is all the work of the Devil.
And yes, I am being sarcastic.
The interesting thing is that those dinosaur species were doomed before they even existed. The original collision happened about 100 million years before the impact, it took that long for the Earth to intersect with one of the big lumps.
That debris is still out there, swinging in it's celestial ballet around the sun and planets. I wonder if any of the significant lumps has "Homo Sapiens" written on it!

I read that as well. I find it funny that people who claim to be so scientific(you perhaps) grab that speculation, and then wave it in our face as fact. Even that article speaks very confidently that the computer simulation knows exactly what happened "160 million" years ago. Bullocks. It is like when something agrees with your world view, you instantly let down your guard when it comes to thinking and reading critically. You need to see that article for what it is, pure speculation. If you let articles like that formulate your opinion about what is real science, you will never find out the truth for yourself. I don't mean you can't trust scientific articles. All I am saying is that you need to recognize when their "certainty" is simply a facade of persuasive wording with no real evidence.

Theory. Not fact, unproven. Did a meteor hit the earth? Perhaps. 165 million years ago? No proof. Even the most sophisticated dating technology cannot age very well. All aging techniques are supported by theory and speculation.
Does it prove that evolution is true? No. It proves asteroids can really pack a punch, though.

Interesting idea. I don't believe we have the final answer but the consensus seems to be that something collided with the earth that caused an environmental disaster to many animals and plants on our planet. In fact this occurred several times. When will it happen next? Will we be prepared?

Very nice work with the cut and paste...but I wonder if it would hold up in court? We have no witnesses, no fingerprints, no DNA, no nothing. You couldn't convict a person of so much as spitting on a sidewalk with this evidence...but you take it as the gospel truth about ancient events? Yes, there are rocks in space, but science will never really know exactly how things went down. And none of this disproves the existence of God in any way.

Did you read it...many (who are they) scientists "believe"...researchers think, researchers used computer simulations, researchers estimate...offered "an" explanation.
They do not know. This is not news because it is all hypothetical.
The media loves to run with every half baked story that anyone who calls themselves a researcher happens to e-mail them as long as it is deemed anti-God.

Can I ask a question to your question? If I can, it would be "Are there any witnesses to this event that can give it an accurate time frame? Most of the theories that believe the world is millions (or more) years old requires as much faith (if not more) than the Creationists theories.

My eyes are WIDE open. You can choose to believe that dinosaurs existed and are extinct, AND believe in God. No where in the bible does it say "Dinosaurs do not exist." As a matter of fact, unicorns and dragons are mentioned in the bible.
You may choose to believe that you "evolved" from bacteria or monkeys. I choose to believe that God created each of us as separate individuals, as humans.
