A friend of mine had this surgery and it has been a great success for her. She weighed a little over 300 pounds. She told me she's not sorry she had it done. It was painful, hard to keep to new eating schedule & got impossibly full from a tiny amount of food. She lost 152 pounds in a little over a year. Her blood pressure is close to where the Dr. wants it to be for the first time in 27 years.
It was so much fun going shopping with her to outfit herself for the cruise she rewarded herself with.
A word of warning though. The Dr. told her she had to be diligent regarding her diet and taking her vitamins, for this surgery is not without its pitfalls.
Follow your Dr's. instructions to the letter, whether you feel like it or not. Tammi does, even a year later.
I'm so proud of her!!

Try dieting! There are so many risks to gastric and no guarantees. I have friends that have had gastric wih no problems at all and friends tha died having it. Your physician should not refer you if you are not 100 pounds overweight and only if he/she has seen you through all different types of dieting. Deffernt diets for different folks, we are all not he same. I am a 41 yer old female that was 90 pounds overweight. Not overweight all of my life but always conscious. After bearing a child at age 30 and a hysterectomy at 31 the pounds added up fast. Depression set in. Make it a personal goal to losse it yourself. I's much healthier and much more gratifying!!! I have lost 60 pounds in the last 6 months by eating healthier and EXCERCISING! People dont know how to excercise. We are not taught how to excercise properly. there are so many things you can do and gradually build your way up. If you loose it slowly, change your eating habits, surround yourslef by positive people and a positive eating regime you will not fail. It's mind over matter! I loved FOOD more than life. Now i love life more than food. I feel great in the mornings, ready to work and socialize, and cant wait till time to go to the gym! I love hearing people compliment me on how great i look and guess what, i did it!!! Not a surgeon! My best friend had gastric as she was fat all of her life. She then had to have a hernia repair, then a breat reduction to rid her body of the double F's she grew, then she had to have an abdominoplasty to cut all the excess fat off, then another surgery to replace the lining used for the hernia, it was full of scar tissue. This is not always the best route! There are some good cases but please think about the risks! My girlfriend is not the same after all of these surgeries and if she had it all to do again she would go back to being fat in a hearbeat! EVen though she went to counseling before, she still sees herself as fat. Do it the right way! If your hair gets too long you cut it! If you get sick you go to the doctor. We are all taught how to care for ourselves, its no differen with being overweigh, only harder. God only gave us one body and its our job to care for it and nurture it!

Before perfomring gastric bypass surgery a good doctor will put you on a diet and exercise program. The purpose of the program is to prove to the doctor that you can stick to the diet and exercise program afterwards and it makes the surgery easier to perform.
just remember Gastric Bypass does not mean permenant weight loss. It's only a tool to help with weight loss.
My suggestion would be start a healthy diet and exercise routine now so you can show the doctor ahead of time that you can do it. Some people do so well on the diet and exercise program that they end up not needing the surgery.

Gastric bypass is a tool .. not a solution. You still need to eat right and watch your portions. I have seen many people have the surgery.. do really great and lose a lot of weight fast, but after a while, start putting the weight back on. Its very sad! I have battled with my weight my whole life so I know its not easy.. its a daily struggle for me as well. Good luck in whatever you decide!
