Army - because they are the best. And I dont have to live in a ship for months at a time. Or pay homage to the glory-boy pilots all the time.

Armored Cavalry - because recon is where the fight is won or lost. Up close and personal with the enemy -- finding out what his plan is so we can destroy him in detail.

Also you get to play with the coolest toys. :) Tanks, Bradleys, mortars, every machine gun worth shooting, cratering charges, etc... if it is cool and goes BANG then Cav gets to play with it.

This is a great story. When I was in High School, the war in Vietnam was going on. It was just normal to expect to enlist or get drafted. I wanted to enlist and fight the VC, my dad fought the North Koreans and the Chinese and I always wanted to be a soldier or a Cowboy.
In my Junior year, the NVA took over Saigon and the Communists won. I was really upset about this. Shortly afterwards, some Cambodian communists captured an American ship and the Marines went in and liberated the ship and the crew and I decided to be a Marine.
After graduating from High School in 1976 I went to enlist into the Marines. At the MEPS they asked me if I was a homosexual, well, I was in denial about that and thought it truthful to say no, then they asked me if I had ever smoked Marijuana. I admitted to smoking pot once when I was 14, I didn't like it and never did it again. I was rejected on the spot.
I was feeling kind of down. Then on the 4th of July, the Isreali paratroopers liberated the hostages at Entebbe, Uganda. That's when I decided to go Army. The Army didn't care if I smoked pot once, just that I didn't do it again. Looking through the Army brochure I saw Cavalry Scout and voila, had to go for it.

My husband is currently deployed to Iraq. He chose the army because he not only wanted first hand expirence in the field defending our country and the innocent people being attacked in Iraq, but he had a family here at home to take care of as well. The army has been very supportive to our family and I am proud to say I am an ARMY WIFE. Just like any other wife would be proud of their husbands in any other branch of service. I must admit it seems strange that my husband is on the complete opposite end of the planet. And I miss him deeply. Hoorah

I'm loving your additional comment.
I chose the marines because I wanted to go through the toughest boot camp. I chose Aircrew because I wanted to fly and I heard the training is second only to special forces. And by the way everyone knows a Marine could kick the hell out of any Soldier being from the navy I'm sure you know that.

I didn't get to choose -- I was Drafted!

After one too many five-mile forced marches in full kit, I got the notion to apply for the Army's Flight School, and got it. That opened up a world which few can ever completely appreciate -- being at the edge of the technical envelope.

I flew as a Scout pilot for the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam. Then? I loved it!

Looking back -- I must have been out of my mind.

It was definitely fun, though.

The "Cav" was the best damned outfit in the U.S. Army. It was my priviledge to serve with them.

I chose AF because I wanted to fly, wanted a better quality of living than the other branches, didn't want to be stationed on a boat for 6mos at a time.

I chose the Air Force for the educational benefits while you are still serving (CCAF), plus I wanted to do ATC and I thought the AF would be the best place to learn it.
