You asked two different questions. To answer the first, no, I don't think true atheists respect Christian's beliefs in the sense that we think their beliefs are wrong; however, I certainly would never mock or disparage a Christian to their face; I would simply hold my tongue when they talked about their religion.

As for your second question, I don't see why my lack of belief should be insulting to a Christian. If they are a true Christian, they should not be so insecure in their beliefs.

That's a tough line to walk. When you don't believe in god, people who worship & claim to speak with him could be considered crazy to you. Therefore, if you're true to your beliefs, you probably shouldn't respect that kind of irrational thought. However, since there's so many christians out there it's easier to accept it and move on a lot of the time. Rather than cause pointless arguments that can't be won. Or atleast keep it to yourself. I think if you have loved ones who are christians, it makes it easier to respect. My family and some friends, for instance, make it easier for me to understand.

To say that "All things which cannot understand the concept of a deity are atheists" is not logically necessary. It all depends on which definition of "atheist" you want to go by and what level of understanding is to be had regarding deity. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, 2nd edition, Atheism is "disbelief in, or denial of, the existence of a god." There can be a wide range of meaning held by this definition. As far as deity goes, there are a host of different definitions in the world on what constitutes "deity."

It is more than disrespectful. It is sin. If you don't believe in God,you do not believe in Jesus. And what He say,?
John 14:6
Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Atheists disbelieve in God so they ignore and disrespect the idea of God much less God Himself. If atheists don't scoff at or mock Christianity then they could respect it. It depends on the individual atheist.

To be an atheist, all that is required is no beliefs in any god/s.

Some atheists are respectful of others' god-beliefs. Most atheists don't care about others' god-beliefs, as long as they keep it to themselves and not proselytize / preach / witness/ lecture about it. Some other atheists do not respect any god-beliefs.

Is it possible for a real ("true") christian to refrain from proselytizing/preaching/witnessing to atheists?

I can disagree with a religious teaching and not insult its believers simply because they believe it. We may have some fundamental issues that we disagree on, and we all know that those can "discussions" can get heated. So, I'm not really sure what you mean by being disrespectful -- you are entitled to your beliefs as I am entitled to mine. It is when one infringes on the other that there is an issue.

Of course it's possible, and plenty of atheists think Christianity or religion in general is harmless, or perhaps even "good" for people.

And, most atheists will agree that there are some teaching within Christianity (and other religions) that they agree with or think are "good" teachings.

Wow. That's not close-minded at all? How about just being a middle-class American is disrespectful in itself to the billions of impoverished, famine and disease-starved people in the world?

I don't care which delusion anyone subscribes to as long as they leave me to enjoy my reality which includes NO invisible sky thingies ... and don't mess with my freedom.

"isn't just to be atheist disrespectful in itself for christianity?"
Isn't ANY belief system that doesn't worship at the same altar as xianity 'disrespectful'?
Using the fact we're atheists who don't believe in imaginary sky things is just misdirection.
It comes down to the fact they're offended that we don't fear their invisible sky guy like they do.
