I was thinking of buying a chest of drawers from there but am worried that as it is such a cheap price that it will look cheap. Has anybody got experience?

I've had good luck with them too. Here's a tip- go to their factory outlet if there's one near you- I bought a 395 dollar solid brass chandelier for 69, and tons of other stuff for very little- often 75% down- LOVE that place. Another one is Hobby Lobby- they often have a great sale in the fall to make room for Xmas- I got a bunch of really gorgeous stuff 75-90% off
I love bargains!

When we first married, my wife and I purchased a sofa and love seat from JCP... we were very satisfied with the quality of the furniture. The sofa was a 'fold out' bed, and had an inner spring mattress... we even used it a few times ourselves when family visited.. it was actually quite comfortable. After 19 years, and multiple recovering, heheh.. we finally retired them.

I would recommend that you go to a store and actually look at the furniture. My wife hates to furniture shop with me, lol... because I am a professional furniture production manager... I will literally turn a unit upside down, take the drawers out, etc.. to see how well it is made, lol.

Pull a drawer out, and look at how it is made. The drawer box itself should be sturdy. Dovetail joints are a good indicator of quality manufacturing. Look at the slide mechanism.... is it just a cheap plastic bracket? or is there a good quality wood or metal glide present? How does it feel when you pull it out? Does it feel too loose, or does the drawer bind?

Is the 'case' or 'box' of the chest made of partical board, or MDF? Or is it actual wood? How thick are the panels?

How is the unit finished? Real wood, or veneer, will have individual character, and is finished using lacquers, polyurethanes, etc... MDF, or partical board, has a 'paper' finish to it. "Real wood" will survive a flood... MDF, or partical board will have to be thrown away if it gets wet... and that includes just getting it wet from mopping the floor around it. MDF and partical board will swell a great deal when water damaged.

As a professional, I know that I can build a very high quality piece of furniture, and by taking that design, and making mass quantities, I can lower the price of the unit.

Happy Shopping :)

I bought a dining room set (glass top, wrought iron with 4 cloth covered chairs) at JC Penney's about 7 years ago and I loved it - in fact, someone in my family is still loving it - I can't remember who it was passed down to last. LOL!!

If you can, you should go and look at it "in person" though. It's sometimes quite a different story when you see it on the Internet and then in the store.
