I never have understood this concept. Why should you fear something or some being that is suposed to be all about love and forgivness. I would think if anything "God" would want to be your friend, not somebody you have to be scared of. If I have to be scared of something to give it worship, can you call it a healthy relationship? Can anyone explane this?

I consider "fear" to actually be "respect". The Lord is our friend and approachable. At the same time everywhere we see the wonder of his majesty. the song "How great thou art" comes to mind. 'my God in awesome wonder I see the works of all thy hands have made".I forget which of the new testament authors this is written in, but to me this explains the fear/respect aspect. When Jesus was to be handed over to the Roman guards, upon viewing Him they fell back . Our pastor said that they seeing Jesus in his full majesty was so awesome it was more then they could bare. Jesus meets us all where we are, fear him only in the means of respecting him. God bless you.

I think it's important to define the word "fear" with regards to God. We are not to be afraid of Him like He's a ghost, or monster. We are to "fear" Him because of who He is - God. This is a healthy fear, realizing that there is Someone higher and more powerful and sovereign over our lives. If you think about it, the fact that He loves us, despite our being unloving (we all sin, right?), and forgives our sins (which means He hates sin and sits as Judge over sin), is a reason to fear Him! It's a fear of Someone over us, who has authority over our lives.
I don't know if you're Christian, but take a look at this verse in the book of Psalms:
Psalm 130:3 If you, O LORD, kept a record of sins, O Lord, who could stand?
Psalm 130:4 But with you there is forgiveness; therefore you are feared.
The fact that He does forgive is a reason to fear Him. This means we acknowledge that we are sinners.

Fear is a daunting word.

It can mean different things within different contexts.

Fear of God is manifested this way. "Fear of the Lord, is the beginning of wisdom." Psalm 111:10

This is a matter of perspective, one that matters only to you and how much wisdom this leads you to.

Best wishes on your journey.

If you have kids you might understand. Would your kids do all the things they do in front of you that they do in private?
It's that type of fear.
My daughter knows I love her more than life itself and I would never lay a hand on her, yet she has been 'afraid' when I found out something she did that I would be disappointed in.

I think the term fear God must mean respect or regard. however the language of the bible is old. and has been changed with time.
