First off, I am so sorry for your loss. Secondly, it's a great thing that you realize you're depressed and want help. I went through almost the exact same thing when my best friend killed himself almost a year ago. I was so scared to tell my parents but it finally got to the point where I was having suicidal thoughts almost all day and even started hearing voices. I felt like I was going crazy so I wrote my mom a letter when I was feeling really depressed (that way my emotion showed through) and told her how I was feeling. Even though you aren't close, your mom loves you very much and she wants you to be healthy and happy. It's awkward to start the conversation, it's almost impossible to get around it, but it has to be done. Best of luck lovebug xoxo

I agree with the first respondent, tell your school counselor. Let the counselor call your Mom & have her come in. You both can meet with her or your counselor can by herself, you just need her to hear an adult viewpoint so, she can see you are serious & need help. I am sure that would help bolster your case. If you don't feel comfortable with the school idea, call your doctor's office & ask for a nurse, explain the situation & ask if she or the Dr. could call or set an appointment for you & your mother to come in & discuss the importance of the antidepressants. Good luck, I hope your mother changes her mind & sees how unreasonable her thinking is regarding this issue.

To mrcricket32, depression is NOT always caused by an outside factor. It can be caused by a chemical imbalance which in fact medication may be able to help. It can also be caused by both outside factors and chemical imbalance. I know because I am a survivor of child abuse (mental, physical and sexual) and after all the issues were out on the table and discussed and resolved and then thrown away I was STILL depressed, even suicidal. It happens to run in my family so it is diagnosed as a chemical imbalance.

Pills won't get rid of depression. they only mask it. Soit won't bother you as much... To get better you have to understand what is causing you to be depressed. You may think you know but it is not something that you think but rather what is prompting you to think that way. That answer comes from a deeper part of the mind. To get rid of that trigger, one must learn how to delete it. Then you won't have the initial stimulation to make you think in a depressive manner.
Unfortunately, pills don't reach that part of the mind. They can only have an effect on the part you think with.
Show this to your mom and see what she thinks.

whether or not the doctor prescribes any medication depends in large part on how old you are. Sometimes all you need is a good counsellor to help you work out your issues. I suggest you talk to a school counsellor and ask the counsellor to talk to your mom. She needs to be educated too.

Sounds like u need a more supportive mom, but if u need help, get help. If u are still in school go see ur counselor, they will help u, even if u just need some counseling. Good luck, but don't just ignore it cause mom won't help.

Talk to your school counselor and have her go to bat for you. Also do research on depression and print it out for her to read. Depression is very very real but the first thing you need to do is just see your doc and to get checked out. Why not have you mom make your yearly physical appointment and you can then talk about it with your doc when you get your physical done.

Your doctor may say that you don't need pills, or at least may start by trying exercise and counseling. Any good doctor will listen to your mother's concerns and try to explain things for her.
