I currently have a Chevy Cobalt ('05). I bought it new, but have always had minor, mostly aesthetic problems with it (the silver trim on the inside is coming off, minor rattling under the hood, etc.) It has great gas mileage and is strong enough for a little car, but my parents, who paid for the car, are urging me to invest in a new one in case the Cobalt goes to crap quicker than it already has.

I am very interested in the Hyundai Tiburon, but I've heard bad reviews as far as power go. A Mitsubishi Eclipse is also a potential for me. I was also looking at Dodge Avengers, but for the most part the options aren't what I want, so we'll stick with the first two.

So, from anyone who has a little experience (not just reading reviews, I can do that too), mainly out of my '05 Cobalt and the '07 Tiburon, which would be better? Keep in mind that I know neither may be perfect - but if I have to decide, will I be better off w/a Tib. or will it work out the same as my Cobalt?

If you buy a hyundai you will end up in the same or worse situation than your Cobalt.

Go check out a Nissan Versa or Sentra. Or check out a Toyota Corolla S. Those are just a few options you have. They are pretty close in price, too.

Stay FAR away from Hyundai, Kia, and Suzuki.

Financially, it makes much more sense to stick with the Cobalt. Cars are very poor investments, they lose value with every day and every mile you put on them, and you've already gone through the worst depreciation with your Cobalt, which happens the first couple years. If you were to buy an '07 (Tiburon or any other car) you'd have to go through that steep initial depreciation again.

Why the rush to replace the Cobalt? It won't fall apart overnight, I don't see any reason to replace it unless/until it's truly causing you trouble. There's no guarantee a new car will be trouble free, either.

My pick (and I know it's not on your list) would be the Dodge Caliber. You can get a new one starting around $14,000.00. They get 24 city and 29 highway mpg. I just think they are cool looking little cars. From your list, if you are looking to drive the car until it falls apart, pick a Hyundai Tiburon. They have a 10 year/100,000 mile power train warranty, which is great, but they have absolutely no resale value. If you were to trade it in, you'd get very little for it. If you are just looking for something to drive for a few years while you are in school, go with the Ford Focus or the Honda Civic. Both are good, reliable little cars that get great fuel mileage and hold their value pretty well. I personally would lean towards the Focus because foreign cars tend to have higher maintenance costs.

Buicks have consistently better quality ratings than other GM vehicles, that's what I would look at. They're also considered "Grandpa cars," because lots of elderly drivers buy them (again, because of the quality ratings). That usually means they've not been driven irresponsibly, and are generally better-maintained. Whan buying a used car, I would stay away from anything popular with males under 35.

My advice is to find a low-mileage, one-owner Buick.

Look at a 2008 Ford Focus http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://news.windingroad.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/08-ford-focus004-600.jpg&imgrefurl=http://news.windingroad.com/body-stylesmarket-segment/coupes/ford-reveals-new-focus-sedan-coupe-for-2008/&h=300&w=225&sz=73&hl=en&start=3&um=1&tbnid=SdEETUjSfad56M:&tbnh=135&tbnw=101&prev=/images%3Fq%3D2008%2Bford%2Bfocus%26svnum%3D10%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26sa%3DN It gets up to 40 mpg and should be no more than $14,000. It features a standard voice activated system that controls your phone calls and music from your MP3/iPod so you don't have to take your hands off the wheel. You just say who you want to call or what song you want to play, and then you can speak out loud while the voice is emitted through the car's speakers, or if you said a song it will automatically start playing.

There is a 4 door or 2 door option.
