Even though I am thin compared to others, I seem to have a cholesterol level just a bit higher than what it's supposed to be, probably about 14 points more. But the problem is, my family is Asian, and they use a lot of vegetable oil. I try to tell them that I shouldn't eat so much of this, but they say I'm not fat and I should eat more at this stage. But I don't want my level to rise. What do I do?

My sister-in-law had an elevated LDL-cholesterol level, and is very slender. With medication and a few minor changes in diet (cutting back on red meat), she has brought her levels under control. Her physician informed her that heredity, in her case, played a major role. According to the National Institutes of Health website, "1 in 500 people is familial hypercholesterolemia (genetics-based high cholesterol), which often leads to early heart disease. But even if you do not have a specific genetic form of high cholesterol, genes play a role in influencing your LDL-cholesterol level." I would suggest speaking with your doctor about the possibility of family history playing a role, and about the different treatment options available. They would be the best source of information.

the ratio of HDL:LDL is more important than the total cholesterol value. 70% of the total cholesterol value is the result of genetic factors, the diet plays a very little part.

vegetables oils do not contain much of the bad carrier of cholesterol or Low Density Lipoproteins (LDL), these are found primarily in animal fats. increasing your fiber intake would probably be the easiest thing to do since changing the cooking oils is not an option as that would obviously effect the taste of all foods cooked. getting in the recommended 30 grams of fiber daily will help to reduce total cholesterol vaules.

Ask your mom about switching to a heart healthy cooking oil and consider taking a supplement that contains plant sterols to help lower your cholesterol.

Have your doctor explain this to your parents if possible. Show them your cholesterol test and any literature that will support your position. Have an elder in your community that will support you and explain this to your parents.

One of my best friends is Asian with very traditional parents I can only say good luck to you trying to convince them to change.
