I'm a college student and I have to drive 54 miles a day. I currently drive a 1998 Explorer Sport and the gas mileage is killing me (around 16 mpg). So what is a good car for under or right around $12000? Thanks for any help!

if you like Nissan's they get well over 35 miles to the gallon, and they are good cars, and priced well within your range, they go good in all kinds of weather also, for gas mileage right now Nissan's have all the others beat, you can get a real new model one for what you have to spend on one, there fairly roomy also, one would last you way beyond college though, good luck with it.

That is easy to answer. You also wanna get a car that will not break down. I would recommend the Toyota Corolla. The gas mileage is GREAT, and it is a fun car to drive. If you want something bigger, a Toyota Camry with a 4 cylinder engine. The Honda Civic and Accord are good too, they just cost thousands more, and don't ride as good. :)

The 2008 Toyota Corolla is about $14,000, and will last you a good 20 years. Think about that! :D

Never buy a used car... somebody got rid of it for a reason! :O

~Cindy! :)

(I have a Toyota, and never SAW a car that didn't break down like this one! I had it 6 years, and only the dome light bulb failed, cost about 1 or 2 dollars for a bulb, and it got a new battery last year. NOT BAD!!! :D Nothing else went wrong. It is VERY dependable! :) My old Ford fell apart under me! Every time I went out in it, I wondered what would fail this time... :( I will never buy anything but a Toyota again!

ALSO... about gas mileage, NEVER believe what the dealers tell you. ALWAYS go to independent sources for your info, like Consumer Reports, and car magazines and web sites. You will only get the truth from somebody that is NOT trying to sell you something! :D

Fairness... If you want a FAST car, and just can't STAND driving a 4 cylinder, try the Camry with the 6 cylinder. I never drove one, but Consumer Reports said they are as fast as the muscle cars of the 60's! :O

Well for not a truck there are Mazda 3's, Honda FIT's, Nissan Sentras, almost any small compact to midsize car without a high trim level is good. Trucks there could be a Ford Ranger, Chevy Colorado, etc on small trucks. I always would buy foreign

You complain about mileage, but in the next paragraph you're talking about getting a truck???

Here are your options:
Suck it up and pay more for lousy mileage (meanwhile squandering precious irreplaceable resources and contribute to global warming), or get a much more economical vehicle:

1.) Get a small 4-cylinder CAR, a wagon or hatchback if possible, with the highest economy rating you can find. Look for one about 2 years old, at around $10,000. Look for smaller Toyotas or Nissans.

2.) Trucks get lousy mileage, get used to it.

a couple of my friends have Mazda 3s. They seem to like them. You could probably get one that is a year or two old.
