My heritage is largely German, and I'd like to visit there soon, so I want to learn the language. Unfortunately I'm not offered classes in German (only Spanish), so I'd like to know the best way to learn it without a class. Different computer programs, books, etc... Would be helpful.

There are lots of great programs out there... try Instant Immersion German v2.0, for instance. Also, on regular cable throughout the world, DW (DeutscheWelle) news (similar to the BBC) plays late at night. Buy a German phrase dictionary and study it, then watch the DW program and compare what you've learned to what they're saying. You'll pick up on lots of common phrases that way. Also, at your local library, there may be seminars or classes you can take that will teach you the language.
By far your best bet though is to check around Barnes & Noble or amazon.com for a German workbook called Aktuelles... it provides lots of wonderful excercises, partnered with the matching textbook and optional video lessons. I couldn't imagine a better way to learn! Many highschools use that system!

The best way to learn a language is total immersion. My nephew went to Berlin for a year to study. He knew a fair amount of German before going over there but now speaks that language fluently.

The best way to learn German is to be born and raised in Germany or Austria and certain parts of Switzerland.

www.ielanguages.com -- they have really good tutorials on most European languages, German included. The only problem is that they don't have audio files for pronunciation, though you might be able to use language tapes and CDs to deal with this.
