In his parables, Jesus talked about clever men who find a priceless pearl and sell everything they have to get it, or who stumble onto a treasure buried in a field, and sink their life savings into the purchase of that field. Eternal life with God is that sort of incredible bargain--there is no price we could imagine that could in any way cover one day in heaven.
Here, Jesus talks to those unwilling to give their lives to him. Do they really strike a good deal by winning great wealth or worldly power in this brief time on earth, while losing the rest of eternity?
We can barely imagine some foolish person who sells his house to buy a three-day vacation in Hawaii. After the vacation is over, he doesn't have a house. But an entire lifetime on earth is not even one second in the endless intimacy of life with God.
Cheers,
Bruce

A man would not profit at all if he looses his soul by gaining the world. A soul is more precious. Jesus said no man can come to the Father except through and by him. I know I want my soul to be in the care of Jesus. He said I will never leave you nor forsake you. That is a true friend that would do that. When I come to the end of my road I want Jesus to be there he said he would go with us even to the end of the world Praise his holy name. God bless

While I'm not entirely clear about what you are asking, I'll tell you this and hope it's what you are looking for. I no longer care to be on this earth. I do not care for my human cage. I would much prefer to cross over. However, I've been left for dead in the hospital 3 times from od's and I used to cut myself...long story. I learned that I was hurting those who loved me I have stopped hurting myself, and try to take care of me to the best of my ability. I now realize that God must have something more for me to do here. I run into ways I can be more God-like everyday. That doesn't mean I am always successful, it just means I see something everyday. I am hoping that I will finally fulfill the reasons I am here and earn the gift of returning home.
may Peace be with you

The KJV gives a better translation of the text in my present opinion. The world is the physical matter of this life. The KJV renders it soul, not life. The soul is the etenal energy that transcends the limits of this life; so one can see the 'world' as temporary, the soul as eternal (heaven or hell) after death.

Isn't that what the first Christian did: gain the whole world, or most of it, and forfeit his life?

Our lives are all forfeit anyway. Might as well make the most of it while we're here. It's the only life we'll ever have.
